Conjecture — structural differences between knowledge domains

Rates of forgetting are faster for immersion than for generally structured content (e.g. hierarchies, outlines) than for schematic content (schemas innate or acquired by the individual during some period). But performance and transfer of learning increase the less structured you go, and perspectives and chunks in immersed learning readily influence other domains regardless of their structure. By contrast, a volume of structural knowledge is constrained by it's structure, and the task is on the individual to remodel incoming information to that structure in order to leverage it. e.g. a chess grandmaster build, refines, and uses an active, efficient, structured schema of thousands of hours of playing but needs to be much more creative about manipulating non-chess information in order for it to "hang off" that schema

Forestry

I'm not sure if it's because my frontal lobes are more mature than they were a year ago but I've lately regained an appreciation for structured information. Outlines, trees, hierarchies. A rhizome is nice -- really nice, actually -- but it's not complete. A forest of trees and their roots is more complete, but it's not complete either. What's needed is an ecosystem, a broad diversification of information organization and knowledge structures and superstructures, where features of one structure bleed into the other but do not collapse into a global monism (though, of course, it could be interpreted that way); the mycelium network does not act alone, and as much as it circuits and circuits into itself, it also circuits out of itself, gluing trees, bushes, and flowers together. And the soil, factual nutrients and rocks stage the plants; so too the decomposers, the itty bitty bacteria, tidying up after epistemo-senescence. And the air, where birds and bees glide across networks unbenowst, but still arriving where they need to be

What's after Twitter?

Many people have differing definitions of what Twitter is. It's a containment zone, a stink, a riot, a social network. It's civilian journalism, it's a rhizome of threads, it's a clanging machine that dreams itself into existence. It's also a bug-riddled website.

Similarly my use of Twitter has changed markedly in the 3 years I've been really on it. 2020: keeping up with a handful of IRL mutuals, trying to be truthful, relevant, and essential. 2021: Discovery of PKM Twitter, and visakanv's threads of threads. 2022: PKM theories. 2023: Balling.

I imagine a Twitter replacement will be more of the grief cycle moving onto more specialized tools and services. Your smartphone goes plunk in the ocean: how long will it take you to pick up the paper maps and MP3 player and dictionary and landline?

Correspondences fossilize. Meetups taper off. Tech companies go bust. But people linger, some way or another.

*raises hand* how does an Overton window degrade? I thought it just moved around on an axis

Super super late but yes I would say an Overton window "just" moves on the axis, and the "width" of that window remains the same. But in highly unusual conditions, like our endoconfabulating web of political discourse on the internet, or the conflicts between a minimized/source group and the mainstream group it (it referring to the larger social structure) intentionally or unintentionally acquired, it and other sociocultural structures will degrade. I think "polarized" is the key word in the OG post, Like -- overexpressing the tail ends of the bell curve, flattening the curve in the "wrong" way. Intensification, acceleration, drinking the bottom of a soda and realizing with a sucrose start you forgot to stir.
