There was a toss up between two moments for me, even though I love them all. It has to be this, though.
When Damon discovered Katherine wasn't in the tomb - and never had been - Elena was the only thing that managed to convince him to come out, and not be trapped forever. Afterwards, while Stefan says nothing, Elena hugs Damon. It's a simple gesture, but probably the only thing close to loving that wasn't sexual he'd had in centuries. It was the first time we saw just how much she cares for him, and the connection between them. Stefan's face just says it all.
It was the beginning of an unforgettable journey...
