“You know that girl?” Pope asks, eyes still paying close attention to the road in front of him.
“Yeah, Deran’s friend. She's pretty cool.” Craig shrugs while rummaging through his pockets.
Pope feels a pang of something like envy creeping up inside of him, a feeling that confuses him. “Why have I never seen her?” he questions, very monotone, trying to conceal this strange emotion.
“Our little brother’s embarrassed of us, Pope.” Craig laughs while rolling up a joint. “Some shit about protecting her from Smurf, being too innocent to hang around,” he adds, lighting up the cannabis.
Pope doesn’t reply. He heard what you were yelling back at the bar—the frustration and fear in your voice. You seemed to be catching on to who the Cody’s really were, yet that’s not what you were worried about. You were worried about his brother. His safety, his health.
That strikes a thought within him; is that why he was jealous? Jealous that Deran, who is gay, mind you, was normal enough to meet a nice girl to care for him the way he deserved? That envy turns into insecurity because, yes, Deran deserves it. Deran’s normal; he doesn’t have manic episodes. He doesn’t have to stare at a blank TV screen to regulate his emotions, but Pope does. Pope’s the crazy brother, the scary one, the lonely one, the one that has no business with a girl as caring as you by his side.
“Put that shit out,” Pope grumbles, just as Craig takes his first puff…
“Deran’s pissed.” Adrian breaks the silent car ride. You guys are on your way to his apartment like he had asked.
“Oh, really? I couldn’t tell!” you snapped back. Adrian glances at you from the driver’s seat, your head resting against the window. You feel bad for acting this way; it’s not like you, but you also feel lied to. There’s nothing worse than being the only clueless person in a room.
“Just hear Deran out when we get there, okay?” Adrian insists. “And if you want to leave, I’ll drive you straight home.”
You respond with silence, and he takes that as a win.
You’re already sitting on his sofa when Deran walks in. He throws his keys on the coffee table and takes his stance in front of the TV.
“I’m sorry for yelling,” he speaks.
“It’s fine,” you mutter expressionless, and there’s lingering silence until you give him an ‘I’m waiting for you to tell me what the heck is going on’ look with your eyes.
He rubs the bridge of his nose. “How the fuck do I even start this conversation?”
“So you’re all just… committing crimes,” you ask with a tone of skepticism.
“When we need to, yeah.” Deran sighs at your 1000th question. He’s now sitting on the edge of the coffee table.
“Okay…” you say. You’re surprised that you’re not filled with any more anxiety, fear, or even anger. It all kind of makes sense to you now. Why he hides his family, his bar, his problems.
“I expected a much worse reaction,” Adrian chimes in from the kitchen table.
“Me too…” You added, still in deep thought. You turn back to Deran, your brows furrowed. “And you guys are good at it?” you ask with even more skepticism.
“I mean… yeah. Are you like… impressed?” he questioned.
“No! I’m just confused about how you guys haven’t got caught!” You countered like it was obvious.
“Got it…” he replies with a flat-lined smile, looking down. Slowly, tears start to form in his eyes. You notice.
“Oh shoot…” You whisper. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean for that to, like, offend you or anything.” You winced.
“No, no,” he clears his throat and very quickly wipes his eyes, trying his best to conceal his emotions. “I just… I’m scared I’m gonna lose you is all,” he admits like it’s the most pathetic thing he’s ever said. That breaks you. Deran’s never vulnerable.
“Oh, Deran...” You get up off the couch and embrace him. “You could do the worst thing in the world, and I would still find a way to forgive you.” You laugh, tears threatening to fall.
“No.” He says. You let go of Deran in confusion. “If my mom finds out about what you know, she’ll have Pope on you until she finds a good reason to…” he trails off, unable to finish his thought, but you understood exactly what he meant.
Until she finds a reason to kill you.
“You have to stay away,” he mumbles.
He cuts you off. “You’ll be fine,” he says sharply. “Pope doesn't know your face, and my mom’s gone, so it'll be fine.” Is he trying to convince you or himself? “You can hang out with Adrian, but I can't be seen with you… for a while,” he adds. "I couldn't protect Adrian, but I can protect you."
The way Deran said it, you think “a while” could mean forever. This can’t be happening. Think. Think. Speak. You need to save this.
“Well…” you hesitate. “Pope talked to me…” This has to work; it's the truth.
Deran pauses, as if you said the worst possible thing he could hear. “What?! What did he say?”
“Not anything crazy.” You deflect. “He just stared at me and asked how I knew you… I said we were friends,” you say regretfully.
“Oh my god,” Deran says emotionlessly into his palms, trying not to yell again. He looks up at you. “So, you barge into my bar, shout stuff about my missing mother, and tell my psycho brother we’re friends?”
“Yeah, basically.” You wince.
“Okay,” He spews, anxiously rubbing his beard and standing up to start pacing. “I’ll talk to him tomorrow. It’ll be fine.” Again, convincing you or himself? He turns to you with a stiff hand pointing in your direction. “Just stay here tonight, alright? Don’t leave.”
You laugh, “Your brother’s not gonna come to my home, Deran. He doesn't know where I live.”
Deran and Adrian pause to look at each other, like they know something you don't.
“What?” You ask, concerned.
“Don’t underestimate Pope,” Adrian says, letting out an awkward laugh.
The room falls silent for a few minutes before you speak again. “What’s his real name?” You ask, looking at Deran, who's looking at the floor.
"And he's really psycho?"
"Seems like it sometimes..." A pause. "When Smurf's around."
"Why only when she's around?" You feel weird for wanting to know so much about Andrew, but you couldn't seem to stop yourself.
"It's complicated..." He pauses. "Pope's just complicated."
"I like complicated men." You tease, trying to bring light to the conversation.
"Cool, cool, cool, cool." You sarcastically stammer on.
He runs another hand down his face. He continues, trying to find the right words. "Pope's not- he's not human when Smurf's in his ear."
"And when she's not in his ear?"
He lets out a short, breathy laugh, "He's... almost human..."
Deran let you take the bed with Adrian that night, leaving him to crash on the couch. You woke up that morning to Deran's very-asleep boyfriend and a deep hunger for something to eat. With everything that had happened the night before, you had forgotten to eat dinner. You put your fuzzy socks back on and readjusted the sleep shirt you borrowed from Adrian before padding out to the kitchen. As you get closer, you start to hear voices coming from the living room. You figure Deran's up watching TV or on the phone. You don't think twice before popping out of the hallway and seeing Deran and Andrew, their heads snapping towards you the moment you come into view.
"Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to-" You don't even finish your sentence before turning around to dart yourself back to the bedroom. You do not want to be yelled at again.
Deran calls your name from the couch, and you freeze. Bruhhhhh. You turn your body around and start rambling immediately. "I didn't know you guys were here, okay? I'm starving; I didn't get to eat last night, and I thought everyone was still asleep. I'm sorry. I can go-"
Deran cuts you off. "This is my brother, Pope." He says.
You direct your eyes to Andrew, standing by the TV, who looks like he's drinking in every detail of you that's in front of him. With his gaze lingering and his awkward stance, you decide to make the first move.
"Hey," You walk up to him with a smile, hand extended for a polite shake. "We met yesterday, right?" You ask, fully knowing the answer to your own question. You give him your name.
Andrew takes a second to look at your hand before him, scared to touch you for fear of scaring you away. He shakes it anyway. "Yeah," was all he said. You feel his heavy, calloused hand within yours, making you notice the cuts and bruises on his knuckles. You make sure to be extra gentle. Looking at his features once again, the bags under his eyes make your heart bleed. He looks rough around the edges and yet so soft, leaving a pleasant ache in your stomach.
You two release the handshake, and you back away a step or two, offering a smile in the awkward silence.
Deran clears his throat. "I have, like, no food here. Just chips, beef jerky, beer." He tells you.
"Awesome," You sigh sarcastically, plopping down on the couch next to you. Deran gets up to rummage through his cabinets.
"I'll- I'll take you... to get something to eat," Andrew interjects, unable to look you in the face.
Not waiting to hear your response, Derans speaks. "Nah, it's cool. We'll go a little later." He is nawt about to have you driving around with Pope Cody.
"Or we can all go now?" You smile.
Deran thuds his cabinet closed, tips his head back, and lets out the biggest sigh.
