Vallende hikers. Ik weet niet of ik zo ver wil gaan als in de tekst, maar het is onbeschrijfelijk hoe vaak ik ben omgevallen tijdens een hike. Het valt ook niet uit te leggen aan niet-hikers, heb ik ontdekt. Maar met een rugzak die de zelfvoorzienendheid van een tent en weken aan eten meedraagt, ben je letterlijk topzwaar. Voeg daar eindeloze keienpaadjes aan toe en je hebt het ideale recept om op compleet willekeurige momenten om te vallen. Het heeft niets van doen met tredzekerheid of enkelstabiliteit. Het gebeurt soms ook terwijl ik gewoon stilsta. Na meermaals spartelend als een schildpadje op de trail te hebben gelegen, zwaar twijfelend aan mijzelf, ontdekte ik ronddolend in talloze hikersgroepen dat dit niet ongewoon is. En dat het er kennelijk 'gewoon bij hoort'. Tja.
