An Inconvenient Friendship | Sterling + Silas

Sterling knew of all the reasons why maintaining the lease on a house that wasn't being used was pointless. He was wasting his money and his time, and to everyone who was not him, this would all seem like an easy decision.  Hell, Juliette had said it best: it was just plain stupid. Still, Sterling couldn't help it.

As he made his way to the house, Cannoli running on ahead as he usually did -- the cat hated crates and it seem ridiculous to try to force him onto a leash -- he thought of one of the earliest lessons he'd learned: it was best to always have a back up plan. Regardless of how good life seemed to be going, or how trustworthy the people in one's life seemed, the smartest thing a person could do for themselves was to plan for failure. So, that's what this house was -- a backup plan in the case that Jules decided that Sterling and Cannoli were no longer welcomed in her house. Plus, he liked the idea of having somewhere he could go that was quiet and void of other people, should he ever need it.

Sterling rounded the corner only to stop short. His usually anti-social cat was sitting peacefully as another cat investigated him. Sterling chuckled. All that time with Jules's girl must've changed him for the better. He clicked his tongue, a grin still on his face, and bent down to run his hand over Cannoli's back. "Are you making friends," he asked the cat. It was ridiculous, he knew, but he'd taken to the nurturing father role remarkably quickly after receiving Cannoli. "Okay now," Sterling stood and called over his shoulder hoping that Cannoli would listen to him just this once. "Time to head home."

[text] At some point, the phrase “I’ve hit rock bottom” became less of a figure of speech and more of the general state of my life.

5. guilty pleasures:sweets, but especially cotton candy; cartoons, especially power rangers… I think that Justin forgets that he’s actually 30 years old.

10. fears/phobias:dying unfulfilled; mice and squirrels. there’s something about the little chewing noise they make that freaks him out.

15.  what it takes to make them cry:depends. he’s known to laugh so hard he starts to cry, but crying from sadness? remembering his mother, mostly.

10. fears/phobias:Sterling, perhaps not surprisingly, has a lot of fears, some more prominent than others. His biggest fears include: Marcus (his stepfather), small spaces, and turning out like his biological father – a failure and a deserter. 

17. regrets:More than anything, Sterling regrets leaving his sister behind when he left home. He regrets not being able to watch her grow up, and still not being strong or brave enough to make sure that he’s safe and thriving. 

20. what-ifs/alternate timelines:

If his mother hadn’t been quite so overworked and stressed from raising an infant all alone while also having to deal with the fact that the man she loved had left her without so much as a word, she would have never have had to turn to Marcus… or if she’d been less starry-eyed, she would have seen the signs of Sterling’s abuse. Maybe, then, he would have gone down a different path – become someone more useful to society, someone less broken.

4. Best places to kiss on their body

Her neck and her tummy. Those are the places that make her feel warm and tingly when they’re kissed. 

20. What-ifs/Alternate Timelines

I think her favorite what-if is if Rose had been like a sister to her and hadn’t had sex with Felix at cotillion, but sadly I don’t see any universe where that didn’t happen. However, there is one where she became a partner in the law firm eventually and they added her name to the sign. There is probably one where she didn’t die terribly in her original life too.

21. Turning points in their life

Her biggest turning point was cotillion. I think in a way it made her a tad more bitter and a little more jealous than she was before. It also killed any self-esteem that she had before that.
