I do think Deadlock was an assassin rather than a foot soldier. I think he was demoted after a failed hit or something similar (maybe they just stopped using him as much). I think it makes sense with his background as a mercenary, and it makes sense with Drift’s whole ninja/samurai shtick (I don’t think the circle of light taught him his style of stealth, they were knights).

My main point though is that I just don’t think he’d be as feared as he is if he was just a foot soldier. He would not be able to do as much damage as a jet/flier on his own, and he’d be more susceptible to getting targeted and killed if he was just some random guy with a bunch of guns. Of course, I do think that once he was demoted he really let his anger show and let it lead him, and that also helped with his reputation (a guy who feels he’s got nothing to lose, who’s downright suicidal but somehow won’t, refuses to die) but I do think something that would be so much scarier is being stationed at a small base that’s still important and knowing that if it becomes important enough, you’ll slowly start losing communication with your peers, and you will only know you’re next when you hear the click of a gun. Taking down an entire base without being noticed until it’s too late would make him far scarier and effective within the army than just another soldier who’s got Megatron’s favor. Because this simply does not make sense either for Megatron to send someone out to look for him if he was just another soldier. If he was some kind of personal attack dog, an incredibly effective stealth agent, then I’d see why his loss would greatly affect the Decepticons. Ik this doesn’t fit the absurdly bad job he did with Wing and those prisoners/slaves but tbf he did not want to do all that shit

drift and hot rod grew up on the streets of nyon together, forged about 2 million years into the war. they were best friends, but lost touch when hot rod lost control and burnt the city to the ground. hot rod doesn't remember what happened that night, but drift does. he remembers that he barely made it out alive.

when they meet after joining their respective sides, neither of them can help but feel betrayed by the other. hot rod is devastated to see how drift changed into deadlock, and deadlock is frustrated that hot rod is still so naive and hopeful after what he did. they become bitter rivals.
