8% is high. If variable is that much cheaper, you can probably get away with variable. Do you have an idea of how long you intend to be in school for? 4 years max, variable is fine. More than that, interest rates could (potentially) get very high.

I have only a year left (this one). The variable is 5.25 but I worry about things changing suddenly for the worst and me ending up with a super high loan rate that i am a slave too. But I feel that my employment prospects are decent and if push comes to shove i have a few free lance options that could pay off nicely. They don’t punish you for early repayment so i could give a little more in school and pay off the rest when i am employed again?

If you're being charged interest, pay that off; otherwise, wait til you're graduated and employed to pay off the principal of the loan. But if you're making money, save it! If it's still around come grad, pay off as much as possible.

so opting for the fixed interest  payment is a good option for now??? because i can’t pay the 120 a month option with the lower interest rate but i can pay the 25 a month rate for now. is an 8% interest rate good???
