hiya!!! when i tell you i absolute BEAMED when i saw this - always so lovely to see folk interested in deaf/hoh dean! alas there is not very much content at all that i've found (other than what i have made myself eek) to the extent where i tried to make a deafnatural reading list and had like three fics lol.

scrolling through my blog like dear lord i did so much for jo harvelle and deaf people

just thinking about jo's dad bill being Deaf and passing his deafness down to jo. but then he dies before she can truly get an understanding of what that means to her. so aged 10 she's left with a patchy fluency in ASL which can do no nothing but deteroriate over time and very little tying her to her cultural heritage (ellen knows ASL and things from bill but she's hearing; it's not the same) and that's why ellen is so protective of jo, because she knows firsthand how dangerous hunting can be, especially for deaf hunters. and then dean turns up, a winchester just like john, and of course she wouldn't want jo to hunt with him - john never learnt ASL, never really found a way to communicate properly with bill while hunting. but she sees the way dean laughs a little blankly at what she says, and reacts a little too late in conversation, and sees that maybe dean is more like jo than he is like john. and so two deaf kids who have grown up in complete isolation from any other deaf people finally find a community in each other

what abour that post didnt imply eileen was deaf lmao

sure thing! as your friendly neighbourhood hard of hearing person who is incredibly tired of watching eileen magically be able to understand everyone around her in situations where i, a person whose ability to hear is better than her's, would struggle, let me walk you through the noticable issues i found in that artwork! (original post itself isn't the problem.) also need to clarify that obviously i don't intend to hate on the art or artist at ALL . i truly have so much respect it's a wonderful little comic. below are just some things to think about in regards to including good deaf rep <3

as has been pointed out to me eileen's hand appears to be moving which suggests signing. cool! but dean does not understand asl and does not appear to be signing himself so this does not benefit eileen being able to understand him which is my main concern. seeing as she is the one who is deaf

they're side on from each other. not ideal for lipreading as dean's lips will not be directly clear to eileen (lipreading is a pretty subjective artform anyway and eileen's reliance on it is the show is not realistic)

they are backlit and walking into a dark room - again, unideal lighting for lipreading as visibility is lower and facial expression/body languages cues are less obvious

i don't mean to say that the post doesn't imply eileen is deaf, but more so that i glance at it and see two hearing people having an audible conversation. as a hard of hearing person i can tell this wasn't drawn with much deaf awareness in mind

and like, i get that deaf awareness and eileen's deafness is not The Point of that comic. truly! it's crack and it's cute! but it would be nice to be more than an afterthought, you know? so yeah. lmao indeed

thinking about hoh/deaf!dean and the year he spent before going to hell. how he was terrified of hellhounds the whole time, how he had nightmares about them, how he was jumpy around dogs and also thinking about how hellhounds are invisible. you can only really tell they're there through their grunting and snarling, and sounds that he can't hear. dean is terrified of hellhounds because they could be right on his tail any minute of any day and he'd never know until they were tearing him to shreds. and how is he meant to be okay with that

I may or may not have posted the first chapter to my Deaf/HoHnatural DeanBenny fic (that I’ve been wanting to write for a while but only recently got inspiration for it ✊🏾😔)

The first part of the fic is from Benny’s POV, and because I’m me it does feature Blacknatural 💕🫶🏾🌸 (⬇️)

A lot of research went into it, and I hope I do everyone justice with this 😭🫶🏾💕💕💕
