The Lost Movie

In 2012, Why Do Ghouls Fall in Love? was C.A. Cupid's first appearance in a Monster High movie. Soon afterwards, the Monster High website announced that Cupid would be transferring to a new school to help more people find their "true heart's desires".

In 2013, Cupid appeared in the Ever After High webisode titled "Here Comes Cupid", confirming that she transferred to Ever After High.

The same year, another Monster High movie titled 13 Wishes was released, and many fans noticed that it contained several Ever After High Easter eggs. One of these Easter eggs was a flashback scene featuring Jiles Grimm, brother to Milton Grimm, the headmaster of Ever After High! @thesewordsofm-i-n-e has a post from the time of this movie's release that pictures said Easter eggs, linked below!

In 2016, yet another Monster High movie Boo York, Boo York provided much more than Ever After High Easter eggs. At the very end, a ghoul named Astronova is on a FaceTime call with two of her friends, telling them that all the worlds they thought were fiction are actually real. Then we see the people on call are none other than Raven Queen and Apple White.

Mattel had allegedly planned for a Monster High/Ever After High crossover movie to release in 2016, under the working title Feary Tale. However, due to Disney's feud with Mattel causing a domino effect that ultimately killed Ever After High and the first generation of Monster High, Feary Tale was never finished.

Interestingly, the Monster High YouTube channel-- which has since been renamed "Mattel Imagine"-- posted short clips of Feary Tale storyboards on May 6, 2016, and according to the Ever After High main Wikipedia page, the franchise didn't officially end until October 7, 2016. The storyboard clips are presented as part of a miniseries in which Draculaura and Clawdeen Wolf go to a cinema and watch a new Hauntlywood film titled The Lost Movie.

In 2017, Little Brown published the final Ever After High book, The Legend of Shadow High by Shannon Hale and Dean Hale. This book was essentially a replacement for The Lost Movie, except it used lore from MH: G2, which kind of accidentally dismissed all the build-up that Mattel had been putting into the Monster High movies and Ever After High webisodes. It's still a good book but it's not exactly the crossover everyone expected.

So where does this leave us now, with Ever After High having been cancelled for a decade and Monster High in its third generation? Well, Cupid's inclusion in MH: G3 has given some fans hope for a second generation of Ever After High, considering Cupid was the first one to bridge the two franchises together.

Other fans, including myself, mourn what Feary Tale could have been. But not all hope is lost, because in addition to the storyboards on YouTube, plenty of concept art has been recovered over the years.

With storyboards and concept art from Feary Tale, as well as The Legend of Shadow High, talented fans have already begun reconstructing The Lost Movie. For example, YouTuber @drawing4fun re-animated the entire labyrinth scene!

@crunchyorochiru has an animatic that combines plot points from The Lost Movie and The Legend of Shadow High!

And creator @butterflycolours just recently assembled a team of fan animators in hopes of re-animating the entire movie!

There are several video essays on YouTube explaining The Lost Movie in more detail than I ever could, simply because I am relatively new to both fandoms. I encourage you to do your own research, read The Legend of Shadow High, and support artists who are trying to bring this crossover back to life!

Ever After High: The Legend of Shadow High (Shannon & Dean Hale) "Now, Ever After High itself is very Web. The children of famous fairytales being destiny-bound to relive their stories or go 'poof' is the driving force behind all the books' conflicts.

However, Shadow High takes it to another level. The narrators, who were present throughout the series, are more influential within the story. Even the straight-laced narrator parents who believe only in observing stories leave 'plop devices' to coerce characters in or out of making decisions. The titular Shadow High is a school for narrators run by antagonist Ms. Direction after a narrator schism between those who observe stories and those who control them. Ms. Direction uses 'unmaking lava' that turns characters and props into the words that compose them, destroying them so that they can be made again in her vision. She also uses narration to compel characters into doing her bidding. The narrator of the book, Brooke Page, is the daughter of the other books' narrators and has frequent arguments with her parents between chapters about why she can't intervene in the story to help the characters. Brooke ultimately does this in the book's climax by climbing the Fourth Wall and asking the reader for help, turning the book into a choose-your-own-adventure and having the reader write in how Ms. Direction is ultimately defeated.

Suddenly, everything Jake knows about ghosts and the rules to life itself go out the window as Sawyer begins haunting him and bodies turn up in his neighborhood. High school soon becomes a survival game–one Jake is not sure he’s going to win."
