I'm a big believer in Dean knowing himself more than he lets on but I also can't help but indulge the idea that the reason he doesn't realise he's in love with Cas for so long is because he was never allowed a best friend growing up (Sam doesn't count that was his kid/brother/responsibility/purpose) so he meets Cas and they become Best Friends and then Cas keeps leaving him and he's devastated and whenever Sam pokes into that grief he's like Cas is best friend/family/Important/faith? Of course I want to kill myself? And it's not until like season 13 when Sam is reacting wayyyyy more to Mary's loss than Cas literally dying in front of their eyes that Dean is like, huh... I wonder if everyone else feels like this about their best friend/family/Important/faith? (They do not)
