On AO3, there are 12,609 completed English-language fanfictions for Death Note (Manga & Anime). Crossovers are excluded.
Further exclusion of L or Yagami as characters (no hate at all — this is for stats purposes) leaves us with only 4,067 stories (32%). This means the majority (68%) of all such DN fanfics feature either L or Yagami Light.
Out of the remaining 4,067, only 2,441 have Mello as a character at all. This is merely 19% of the total 12.6K.
TL;DR - Folks gotta write more.
