He will head to the dining area and have breakfast, where the cook will greet him with; 

MISS DEBBIE - “Happy Birthday Theo”

THEO - “Thank you Miss Debbie, Eggs, bacon and toast?”

MISS DEBBIE - “You know it, every Saturday Morning.”

He will sit in the same seat as he does every other morning. The one in the corner, with two chairs, one for him and one for his only other friend in the house, Michael. This was “their table” and everyone knew to not take either seat.  It had been that way for years.  

But, as usual, Theo would eat alone, as Michael would say “I skipped breakfast this morning” or.... “I was up early and already ate.”

Comfort is offered

I have read this entire series about the Budbury cafe (by the sea) and it makes me feel warm and cosy inside and want to join in their fun.

Each book gives us a view of the village and its inhabitants from their different story viewpoints, even when the timeframe and occasion is the same. We learn more about them each time, as the stories focus on one ‘pair’ in each book.

This book, as ever, has a happy ending with a matched pair and a father – or two -for a young boy.

After breakfast, it being a Saturday, he and Michael,  would go to the library to read the newspaper from the day before.  His way of keeping up with current events. Michael’s way of seeing who won the game the night before. 

Ms. Johnson, the librarian, who also works as the cook, will come by and tell him how handsome he looks today...

DEBBIE- “You certainly like your Saturday Newspaper, don’t you, Theo. Did you see the story about them tearing down the old barn out near Hallow Drive.”

THEO- “Yeah, what was that old barn for anyway? It was a hazard.”

DEBBIE- “Years ago it used to be the hangout for all the high school kids. Until some boy fell from the hay loft and broke his neck.  The police fenced around the property until they decided what to do with it. I guess they finally decided.”

THEO- “Should have done that to begin with...”

DEBBIE- “You look very handsome today as always Theo, Happy Birthday.”

THEO- “Thanks Miss Debbie..” 

and like every other Saturday, he would look over at Michael and roll his eyes. Michael would laugh, knowing how much it irritated Theo.  

MICHAEL- “Miss Debbie, thinks you are handsome today...Theo....better watch her!”  

THEO- “Your disgusting, Michael.”

Way to spend the 'Festive' Season

This is the 3rd  book in the Comfort Cafe series that I have read and still found it enjoyable in its genre.

Becca, the Xmas Grinch, just has to change her attitude when she comes to stay with her sister at Xmas. Especially when she finds out just how irresistible Surfer Sam the Coastguard and Shore Ranger really is..

So the cafe and its inhabitants of the mythical Budbury cast a spell again and change a life for the better and we all feel hugged again in Cherie’s vast bosom and happily drinking Laura’s Hot Chocolate….

Sunshine and the Summer is here?

Here we journey into the world of Willow and learn why her hair is dyed pink, and why she keeps a journal.

This is a poignant story, sympathetically written with an empathetic look at how life is with someone with Alzheimer’s or indeed any form of dementia.

Willow is the owner of the most desirable dog in the village – at least according to all other dogs – and lives in a cottage on Frank’s farm with her mother.

Her 3 older siblings are scattered but she stayed home and now finds she can’t really leave her delightful, free-spirited mother due to her dementia. And so we learn about the constraints and emotional heartache that come with such circumstances.

Let's go on holiday!

This is just the book to be reading on a cold, miserable, wet winter’s day. As long as you are indoors and warm!

It reminds you that England can have warm days with a shining sun, and that there is no coastline to match the Jurassic Coast. And having been there many times myself, and just back from the (supposedly) prettiest part of Ireland, I am more than ever convinced. Cornwall is over-rated for the distance you need to travel and the traffic you need to battle to get there. And the weather is wetter too!

These books about the Sunshine (Comfort) Cafe are a like a warm hug with hot chocolate, cream and marshmallows. Which they seem to drink a lot of in the Cafe. They somehow just stop short of being too sweet, even though you know that there will be a happy ending (for the romance at least).

I even liked the dogs in them. Though the author doesn’t mention just how much hair a Labrador sheds – boatloads as I have had recent experience of!
