Annie Leibovitz photographs John Lennon and Yoko Ono to make the cover of the Rolling Stone. She had John remove his clothes and curl up next to Yoko on the floor. Leibovitz recalls, "What is interesting is she said she'd take her top off and I said, 'Leave everything on'—‌not really preconceiving the picture at all. Then he curled up next to her and it was very, very strong. You couldn't help but feel that he was cold and he looked like he was clinging on to her." ‌John Lennon was shot and killed on the street five hours later.

I’m not emotionally ready for the pretentious bullshit that the Lennon Estate and Sean are going to be posting all over social media tomorrow for the 40th Anniversary of John’s death.

Today is a weird day. In short, I don't mourn a musician or an idol. I think of John as lovable person, whose life was all about searching for love and acceptance. I cry today because I cannot understand why someone cannot love their kid. I do not understand how a parent can ignore their kid or abandon them. Not a single child on this earth is a burden. I cry because this teenager thought fame would fill in the hole left by his childhood. I cry because the people that DID love him lost him in such a horrific way. I cry because I don't think he ever got the love he needed. And I wonder if he would have it if he were alive today (the short answer is no). I know nothing any fan could say would really matter but I hope the love the world feels somehow gets to him and that he is at peace with everything. I'm glad the few friends and family he had in his early years were there for him. I think of them today as well.
