Mandarin Pronouns
Notes:
Not included in the chart because it didn’t fit and I’m too lazy to do it over again:
我的 wǒde My (in impersonal situations)
你的 Nǐde Yours
它们 Tāmen They (inanimate objects)
们 [men] and 的 [de] are kind of hard to explain. 【们】 will make a pronoun plural. 【的】 adds possession in the case of pronouns, but not always. There are many functions for 【的】 outside of pronouns, unlike 【们】。
When I said earlier 【我的】 is for impersonal situations, I mean that if it’s a family member, you don’t have to say 【的】。I can just say 【我妈妈... 我爸爸】 But if it’s a friend, or something that isn’t directly associated with you, you have to use the possessive 的。
If someone walked up to my cup at a party and reached out for it, I would say 【我的 or 我的杯】 to tell them it mine. Not just 我杯。
You’ve probably seen it before but 她, 他, and 它 are only distinguishable by written form. Why? I don’t know. In English they are very easy to tell apart and so we tend to depend on them more. Once we’ve marked the topic, (there’s an actual word for this but who the fuck knows what it is) we can talk solely in pronouns. Can’t really do this in Mandarin, so avoid confusion by making sure everyone’s on the same page before switching to the tā pronouns.
Now I’m a little curious. 她,他,and 它 are completely undistinguished in speech, so I wonder why this doesn’t affect the culture. I’ve read (in linguistic classes) that languages can affect the way we think about things. It’s strange that in a culture where all of the pronouns are the same when talking about gender, the power distance between men and women are so different. The culture is very masculine despite the languages inception that they are the same. Woah, That’s a lot of words, I’m sorry. Just my philosophical wonderings. If anyone knows that answer, please tell me. ...This would make a great essay paper for my Anthropology class.
Anyway, Zhongwen-lingblr, over and out.

Northern Eurasia 29 years ago today: Glasnost (23 Dec 1989) https://buff.ly/2CvHave By the late 1980s, the Soviet Union was surrounded by hostile states, while having to cope with economic woes, discontent in Poland, and a high tech arms race with the United States. Mikhail Gorbachev, the new Soviet leader, responded with huge political and economic reforms. In 1989, he allowed elections and revolutions to overthrow the communist regimes in eastern Europe. #northerneurasia #history #welovemaps #map #1980s #1989 #afghanwar #warsawpact #berlinwall #coldwar #december #december23 #eastgermany #westgermany #glasnost #gorbachev #mikhailgorbachev #sovietunion #russianhistory #maps #ussr #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #worldhistory #historygeek #historynerd #armsrace #perestroika (at Moscow, Russia) https://www.instagram.com/p/BruCNREg9bb/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=olkgqii1ibbt
