It’s day 23 of the #letitspin Vinyl Challenge from @xoaudio_: Elf - A Joyful Album. Sly & The Family Stone - Greatest Hits (Epic, 1970) One of the great party platters! It doesn’t get much more exuberant than this perfect summing up of Sly’s early stuff, with the key additions of two of his funkiest non-LP singles, Hot Fun In The Summertime and Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin). Mandrill - Mandrilland (Polydor, 1974) When these guys are good, they are a month the very best of 70s funk bands. Exhibit A is side one of this double album, which is practically a suite of seamless second-line Brooklyn jamminess. It’s day 20 of the #letitspin Vinyl Challenge from @xoaudio_: The Best Man - A record you could marry. Various Artists - Kurt Weill’s “Lady In The Dark” (CBS Special Products, 1963/73) I will not marry anyone - or any record - as I have been happily married to THE BEST person for over 33 years ☺️. But I thought of this delightful Weill/Gershwin collabo for its second series of “Dreams” - the Wedding Dream, which is made up three songs which depict the moment when heroine Liza Elliott is about to marry Randy Curtis. Melodic flights of fancy and stream of consciousness word play ensue. The “play with music” contains one of Weill/Gershwin’s most celebrated songs, My Ship. This was the first complete recording of the musical, coming over 20 years after its Broadway debut. It’s day 19 of the #letitspin Vinyl Challenge from @xoaudio_: Christmas With The Kranks - A record you share interest with someone. Ralph Shapey - Songs of Ecstasy/Emmanuel Ghent - Helices (Desto, 1970) Manny Ghent, who composed Helices, a piece for violin, piano, and prerecorded tape, was a childhood friend of my father’s, who gave me this album. He knew I would love the avant garde nature of the music, which was true, and that I would be even more interested since it was our family friend’s work. It’s day 17 of the #letitspin Vinyl Challenge from @xoaudio_: Deck The Halls - Your Go-To Holiday Album Bing Crosby - Merry Christmas (Decca, 1951) While my true go-to is a mixtape I made of the best of Elvis, Ella, Phil Spector, and James Brown, it isn’t really Christmas without Der Bingle! I mean, he kind of invented the genre with these songs, which were originally released as a series of 10” 78 RPM singles in 1942. I’m pretty sure they’ve been in continuous circulation ever since - and rightly so! The vocals are flawless, of course, and the arrangements are somber or joyful as fists the song. I also like this collection because it’s SHORT - always leave them wanting more, especially where Christmas music is concerned 😂. It’s day 16 of the #letitspin Vinyl Challenge from @xoaudio_: Scrooged - record you got a deal on. Neil Young - On The Beach (Reprise, 1974) I bought the whole “Ditch Trilogy” in original pressings for $15 from a neighbor who was divesting her collection. She was a good steward of the albums, too, with all original inner sleeves and inserts. The vinyl crackles mildly but there’s no damage.
