It’s day 24 of the #letitspin Vinyl Challenge from @xoaudio_: A Charlie Brown Christmas - A Christmas Album or Soundtrack. Merle Haggard’s Christmas Present (Capitol, 1973/79) Despite the tacky cover, this is actually a really nice album. Side one features 5 Hag originals, including the magnificent If We Make It Through December, and side two has his takes on holiday classics. If you want a little Bakersfield flavor with your wassail, look no further! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #decembervinylchallenge #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity @merlehaggardofficial @capitolrecords #70smusic #christmasmusic #countrymusic https://www.instagram.com/p/CX4sgHrAX2s/?utm_medium=tumblr
It’s day 23 of the #letitspin Vinyl Challenge from @xoaudio_: Elf - A Joyful Album. Sly & The Family Stone - Greatest Hits (Epic, 1970) One of the great party platters! It doesn’t get much more exuberant than this perfect summing up of Sly’s early stuff, with the key additions of two of his funkiest non-LP singles, Hot Fun In The Summertime and Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin). Even with the slight hint of darkness in that last song, which pointed the way to There’s A Riot Going On, it’s impossible not to be happy while this is playing! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #decembervinylchallenge #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #60smusic #70smusic #greatesthitsthursday #greatesthits #funk #soul #slyandthefamilystone https://www.instagram.com/p/CX18CapAetP/?utm_medium=tumblr
It’s day 22 of the #letitspin Vinyl Challenge from @xoaudio_: 101 Dalmatians - Show Off Your Biggest Collection Kenyon Hopkins The Strange One (Coral, 1957) Rooms (Cadence, 1957) Eleven Against The Ice (RCA, 1958) Contrasting Colors (Capitol, 1959) The Sound Of New York (ABC-Paramount, 1959) Lonelyville “The Nervous Beat” (ABC-Paramount, 1959) Riding The Rails (Capitol, 1960) Swinging Serenades (Capitol, 1960) Nightmare! (MGM, 1962) Sound Tour Of Spain (Verve, 1962) East Side / West Side (Columbia, 1963 The Yellow Canary (Verve, 1963) Lilith (Colpix, 1964) The Reporter (Columbia, 1964) Mister Buddwing (Verve, 1965) This Property Is Condemned (Verve, 1966) Bowie is actually #1 and The Beatles #2, but I’ve shared those several times. So here’s my Kenyon Hopkins collection, which is just a hair bigger than my Hendrix wax. I will continue to shout from the rooftops that Hopkins is one of the most underrated American composers, especially of film scores, deserving to be mentioned in the same breath as Henry Mancini and Elmer Bernstein, just to name two. If you’re unfamiliar, do yourself a favor and pick up one of these next time you’re crate digging. Some of them might even be lurking in the nearest dollar bin! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #decembervinylchallenge #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #soundtrack #soundtracks #soundtracksonvinyl #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity https://www.instagram.com/p/CXzwYDrAKTx/?utm_medium=tumblr
It’s day 21 of the #letitspin Vinyl Challenge from @xoaudio_: Santa Paws - A Record With Animals On It. Mandrill - Mandrilland (Polydor, 1974) When these guys are good, they are a month the very best of 70s funk bands. Exhibit A is side one of this double album, which is practically a suite of seamless second-line Brooklyn jamminess. Sometimes they meander - as on side two - but they are certainly more than just their greatest hits. #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #decembervinylchallenge #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #funk #soul #70smusic https://www.instagram.com/p/CXw6H4EgpKd/?utm_medium=tumblr
It’s day 20 of the #letitspin Vinyl Challenge from @xoaudio_: The Best Man - A record you could marry. Various Artists - Kurt Weill’s “Lady In The Dark” (CBS Special Products, 1963/73) I will not marry anyone - or any record - as I have been happily married to THE BEST person for over 33 years ☺️. But I thought of this delightful Weill/Gershwin collabo for its second series of “Dreams” - the Wedding Dream, which is made up three songs which depict the moment when heroine Liza Elliott is about to marry Randy Curtis. Melodic flights of fancy and stream of consciousness word play ensue. The “play with music” contains one of Weill/Gershwin’s most celebrated songs, My Ship. This was the first complete recording of the musical, coming over 20 years after its Broadway debut. While I’m not a huge fan of musical theatre on the whole, I love me some Kurt Weill! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #decembervinylchallenge #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #musicaltheatre #kurtweill https://www.instagram.com/p/CXucE1CgRo0/?utm_medium=tumblr
It’s day 19 of the #letitspin Vinyl Challenge from @xoaudio_: Christmas With The Kranks - A record you share interest with someone. Ralph Shapey - Songs of Ecstasy/Emmanuel Ghent - Helices (Desto, 1970) Manny Ghent, who composed Helices, a piece for violin, piano, and prerecorded tape, was a childhood friend of my father’s, who gave me this album. He knew I would love the avant garde nature of the music, which was true, and that I would be even more interested since it was our family friend’s work. It’s a great piece, too, and I’m amused to note that the record was produced by Bruce Swedien, best known for his work with Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Paul McCartney, and other superstars! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #decembervinylchallenge #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity https://www.instagram.com/p/CXr_lV3ACMa/?utm_medium=tumblr
It’s day 18 of the #letitspin Vinyl Challenge from @xoaudio_: Last Christmas - Your favorite album of 2020. Bob Dylan - Rough And Rowdy Ways (Columbia, 2020) It’s still somewhat stunning to me that in that crazy year of 2020, Dylan delivered unto us one of his ultimate masterpieces. No other album sounds quite like it but it is still unmistakably DYLAN. And I’ve heard he’s been killing it with these songs on the road. Will wonders never cease? #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #decembervinylchallenge #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity @bobdylan @columbiarecords #bestof2020 https://www.instagram.com/p/CXpNOskg9de/?utm_medium=tumblr
