I am convinced that our greatest vulnerabilities to climate change are not physical conditions like low-lying cities, but rather our social divisions—classism, racism, and sexism. These divisions make us vulnerable to responding to crisis with fear and hatred rather than solidarity, with competition rather than cooperation.... In those dark moments we continue to struggle for justice, because that is what it means to be faithful to the people we love, to be faithful to the world we love, and to be faithful to a God who loves the world.

This interview was pretty interesting. A lot of really great points raised. Well worth watching. Amazing little speech at the end too. Question more.

"During the closing weeks of the Bush White House, 27-year-old environmental activist Tim DeChristopher went to protest the auction of gas and oil drilling rights to more than 150,000 acres of publicly-owned Utah wilderness. But instead of waving a sign, DeChristopher disrupted the proceedings by starting to bid. Given an auction paddle designating him “Bidder 70” DeChristopher won a dozen land leases worth nearly $2 million. He was arrested for criminal fraud, found guilty and sentenced to two years in federal prison—even though the new Obama Administration had since declared the oil and gas auction null and void."

What I did at the auction was really the first time I embraced my freedom and refused to let go of it. And everything before that, when I was being obedient to the system -- that I knew was destructive to my own future, that I KNEW was unjust, that was really sacrificing my freedom, when I knew that I had to consider myself too helpless to do anything about this.

Tim DeChristopher out-bidding the oil companies for pristine southern Utah. THAT was magic. He called the auctioneers on their theatre, and taught us all how naked the Emperor had become. His hex-prayer was to just recite higher and higher numbers of imaginary wealth. Tim DeChristopher's sentencing has been rescheduled for July 26 - possibly because such a large number of people were gathering for the previously scheduled sentencing today.
