I think he's a great guy and a valiant attempt by Intsys to tackle racism respectfully. Their success should be judged by a poc who understands the subject better than little old white me.
I find that there's a difference between smart, intelligent, and clever. Dedue is smart. He has a healthy enough mix of common sense and book smarts to be able to tackle most situations. Lysithea is intelligent. She's very well educated, but doesn't always have the practical knowledge to apply everything she knows; which will change as she gets older. Claude is clever. He Knows how it's gonna work out, but is a chaotic dumbass.
Very succinctly put and I believe that you are absolutely right
Little Headcanon: I like to think that in their free time Claude, Petra, and Dedue like to hang out together. Like Petra and Dedue realize that Claude isn't purely fodlan born and so the three have tea and talk about their homeland. They would also share recipes and make food from their homeland together.
Claude tries to be vague about where he's from but neither Petra nor Dedue were born yesterday so they indulge him and he knows xD
Okay please imagine with me Ashe's reaction when Dedue shows up alive. Based on what Ashe says to you it's clear he's pretty torn up over Dedue's supposed death. And after losing his parents, his big brother, and then a parent again, he's probably touchy over the issue of death. So here he is grieving, thinking of his friend whenever he goes into the greenhouse. And then Dedue shows up, a little worse for wear, but very much alive. Ashe would be hysterical and I cannot be convinced otherwise.
Oh he's so happy, like you wouldn't believe! All decorum goes out the window, he full on tackles Dedue and even manages to move him back like two inches
Dedue just let's him and the others give him some space cuz Ashe has lost a lot of people in his life and he deserves this

Byleth is just so confused the whole time and when they explain "big sibling instincts" Ingrid turns around so fast her braid smacks Annette straight off her chair and glares at Sylvain suspiciously

Dimidue had potential. It Could have been a great ship that made me feel all the feelings, but it sort of goes with my criticisms on now Dedue's character is handled in general. I love him, but I wish they'd given him an arc that allowed him to grow past the 'everything for my lord' thing, specifically because his trauma intersects with his race. He experiences systemic racial violence, so I find his dynamic with Dima a little uncomfy; but thankfully so does Dima, so at least someone's aware.
Yeah, I'm not too happy about Dedue's complete devotion to Dimitri either but at least people mention how unhealthy it is on occasion, not least of all Dimitri himself and, in his own inimitable way, Felix
I think what the intend was to contrast Petra's kinda forced devotion to the Empire. She has no choice but to follow to keep her home safe but does potentially decide to fight back, Dedue chooses to follow out of hope for a better future for his people and kinda loses sight of where loyalty ends and obsession begins...
It's not as well done as other things in the game, like Claude's arc or as I said Petra's moral struggle, but hey, you can't win em all
