Submission: Good faith and bad friends
Melissa does things to foster a sense of community at Shakesville and has a “lint trap” memory. If we recognize certain long-time commenters’ names, she does, too. Yet when she moderates, argues with, and bans people, I haven’t seen her make concessions for long-time Shakers or acknowledge people’s contributions to the community. During the “Simpons” argument with dhudson, she made a remark about dhudson’s comments in another thread, but that was bitter and snarky. Does anyone remember a moment where instead of escalating tensions and cursing, she tried to de-escalate and told someone, “You’ve been a commenter here for such a long time, I don’t think that you’d intentionally be so hurtful, but you’re making me feel unappreciated and kind of triggered, and here’s why…” Anything like that? Does she acknowledge that anyone has earned a “good faith” reading like readers should always give to her?
A separate issue…
After years of being harassed and abused by haters, trolls, misogynists, Bill Donohue’s people, and anyone else, I can see why Melissa would assume the worst from a “hate site.” If she sees people threatening her beloved Deeky with violence, I don’t blame her for being sensitive. After years of harassment and threats, I can see why her perspective is different.
What is Deeky’s problem? What kind of “friend” is he? If he gives a shit about her, he should try to help her to put things in perspective. He should tell her that calling him slappable is just a stupid comment and he doesn’t think that anyone’s really going to track him down and assault him. He should call us assholes and tell her not to worry about it. Instead, he lets her get over-the-top worked up over it and then acts all Internet tough guy with his “bring it on” tweet. She’s scared and agitated, and her best friend in the world is being a complete jerk about it.
Submission: keep it classy, deeks.
I’ve dropped this into a few threads today, but I feel like I can’t wash it off yet. From the Acid Facials post:
Deeks: LOLOLOL right? We should do chemical peels while watching theFlowers in the Attic remake. Liss: Yes! We should! I totally set up my DVR to record it! Deeks: Good idea! I’ll set my DVR right now. Liss: Are you so excited about it? It looks so gross and amazing. Deeks: I’m so excited! I’m prolly gonna jerk off to it! Liss: LOLOLOL!!! It looks so much creepier, i.e. faithful to the book, than that old 80s version. Deeks: Movie gold!

WHAT THE EVER-LOVING FUCK. This is why we think he’s skeevy, Shakesville. I do not care how ironic he was being.
The commentary about “tits” didn’t bother me terribly…I thought it was inappropriate, but I could see how it could just be casual banter between friends. But! If a friend of mine EVER made this joke around me, I’d never let my nephew near him again! Same goes for anyone thinks a suggestion I watch p*rn with my nephew one day.
Happy now, Pharyngula? Oh, wait, probably not. "
