A day out in Deeping...
Deeping Rangers 5-3 Heanor Town
1st October
Oct 1, Deeping Rangers 5 Heanor Town 3 fixture page in the Uhlsport United Counties League
I think it’s an open secret that despite being a born and bred Cuckoos supporter, I have lived over the border in Lincolnshire for the last 4 years.
During that time, I have still attended Yaxley matches when I could, something I started with my grandfather and father in the late 1970s.
I will admit that I have been to Deeping matches to take in some live football. Mainly walking down for midweek home matches to take in a pint and a game.
This season things have felt different.
It doesn’t need repeating in detail but over the summer a number of players and coaching staff left Yaxley FC to join Rangers.
Despite dropping a division to do that it was clear that the potential here was seen as equal or better than that of Yaxley FC.
The pre-season match between the two wasn’t a true foretelling of the season for Deeping. They beat us 3-0 but have shown some really inconsistent form on the pitch and plenty of movement off it. To date, its painful to say it but it has been a reflection of how our season would pan out.
Whilst only Spencer Tinkler and Ross Watson moved directly to Rangers from the playing staff, they were joined by Sam Spencer (who has moved on already) and Matt Sparrow via Spalding United.
I think its an open secret there are other players currently at Toojays Park that would be coveted by Luke Hipwell and Scott Bogusz should they become available. But then I speak to supporters of the likes of Bourne and Stamford who share that view that they hear Yaxley players are headed to their clubs.
In recent days the movement between our two clubs has started to go the other direction. Marcus Pancho was on the bench for Yaxley at Boldmere this weekend before getting on due to an early injury.
The step up to NPL level will be difficult for him, for sure, but he does look a prospect and will hopefully find his feet in the Cuckoos side.
So on to my visit to see Rangers play Heanor.
This was a much improved showing by Deeping after their previous outing, a 4-0 home drubbing by Skegness where Dan George had a difficult night in the nets.
Ben Seymour-Shove is a well-respected opponent of Yaxley over the years and Josh Moreman needs no introduction having done a grand job for us on dual reg.
Throw in Matt Sparrow on the wings and this side isn’t a goal shy as it looked a month ago.
The match was a really strong advert for the UCL and should our season carry on in the same vein as it is at the moment and we go down, don’t expect us to get back up without a struggle.
I wondered what on earth Wisbech could have been doing lower mid table, but this is a real bona fide division with a lot of good players and well organised teams.
What was great to see and really pleased me was the regard our former YFC colleagues still have for us.
What is clear is that there is a desire in the Deeping camp for Yaxley to survive.
We can all have our views on where these departures left us as a club and a team but this is part of the game and part of sport in general.
Would I say I have forgiven, forgotten and moved on?
Not sure. But it certainly enhanced my Saturday afternoon to see and share a drink with some friendly faces that I have know and watched for many years.
Deepin brings the Linux world to another level. Fucking chinese geniuses!
Tough day in Tier 4
Tough day in Tier 4
Windy, flat and cold… it was a ride of 2 halves! Having been consigned to the garage and the turbo for most of the festive period I took advantage of being in a single tier Covid area and headed out yesterday. It’s very unusual to have any sort of northerly wind in this part of the world, even in the winter months. When they do arrive however, they are icy and strong with gusts that go through…
