I feel very foolish, and I expect I'll feel more foolish when I understand. I'm asking anyway: what is Deergate?

You’re not foolish at all. The gate thing is like Watergate - like whenever there’s a scandal about something, the press add -gate to the end of it, so this was Deergate, It’s a thing from one of my fics, Penance, so I guess this is a spoiler if you haven’t read it. There’s a deer in that fic, and in Gold’s mind it’s kind of connected with Belle. I spent several chapters dropping bits of deer-related symbolism into the fic, then after he breaks up with her in the worst possible way, he hits the deer with his car. Completely by accident, it has to be said, but the symbolism was - well, I couldn’t resist.

I've told you before, dearie, and I'll say it again: you may not have intended Bambigate, but it's a brilliant piece of symbolism in a heart-wrenching work of art. In a few lines you encapsulate Belle and Gold's beautiful but fragile and threatened relationship and SHOW (not tell) what's going on at that desperate state of the story. You're a wonderful writer. Live with it.

I think the fact deergate is still around shows how talented of a writer you are. You have the ability to make so many people feel emotions over symbolism of a deer.
