Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Philip Vera Cruz on his birthday. As a Filipino American labor leader and leader in the Asian American civil rights movement, Vera Cruz was a co-founder of the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee, which later merged with the National Farm Workers Association to become the United Farm Workers.

Please join us TONIGHT for a screening of the documentary #DelanoManongs and a book reading by author & #UCDavis alumnus, Patty Enrado! 📚🎞️🍇 "Endrado's novel [A Village in the Fields] is a fitting sequel to Carlos Bulosan's groundbreaking America is in the Heart" -Amerasia Journal Thursday (TONIGHT), April 27, 2017 6:10 - 8:00 PM @ Olson 158 (at UC Davis)
Fourth drawing for my #inktober practice celebrates the visionary, and often overlooked, Filipio leader Larry Itliong. “Larry Itliong was a Filipino American labor union leader. In 1965, he lef the Filipino Strike of Coachella Valley grape growers which resulted to higher wages. In the same year, he led a walkout of 1,500 grape pickers and began the great Delano Grape Strike to protest low wages and miserable working conditions. Cesar Chavez joined him later that year. In 1066, Larry Itliong and Cesar Chavez formed the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee, which later became the United Farm Workers of America.”* Last year the State of California celebrated it’s first annual Larry Itliong Day on October 25th (mark your calendars) after Assemblymember Rob Bonta introduced a bill to establish the day into law. *Bio from City of Carson flyer. The City of Carson is celebrating it’s 7th annual Larry Itliong Day on Satruday, October, 22, 2016. #larryitliong #delanomanongs #awoc #ufw #decolonize #learnthehistory #drawing #dignidadrebelde

I dedicate this #LaborDay to all the Manongs of Delano a.k.a. the Filipino farmworkers who were the first to walk out of vineyards in 1965. A chapter of history we now know as the Delano Grape Strike and whose bold steps eventually led to the multiethnic United Farm Workers movement. One of the largest labor movements in history. #DelanoGrapeStrike #DelanoManongs #RemembertheManongs #RememberDelano #KnowHistoryKnowSelf #NoHistoryNoSelf #ProjectBulosan #AsianAmerican #FilipinoAmerican #Filipno #ethnicstudies #BoldStep50 #MCM #ManongCrushMonday [Images from UC San Diego Library (top); Walter Reuther Library (bottom)] (at Delano, California)
