I've been doing some extensive doodling on Dendric, the language spoken in Chthonia, here's a chunk of it:)
Dendric is not an alphabetic language. Rather than phonograms representing sounds, it uses ideograms, representing concepts. A single character can only convey meaning as a label; i.e. a speaker of Dendric would understand what was meant by a container carrying the character for “salt.” In order to convey any meaning more complex than labeling, Dendric uses a basic semantic unit called a “metaplex,” which consists of three characters, known as the “root” “branch” and “crown.” The meaning asserted by any given Dendric utterance can be written as:
[Root] is like to [crown] in terms of [branch].
While most real languages use this kind of expression for analogy or poetic metaphor, Dendric uses it to convey every possible meaning. For example, “the man is running” would be written in Dendric as something like:
[the man] is like to [wind] in terms of [motion].
A Dendric-speaker would not regard that metaplex as a poetic expression, but as an eminently practical one. A particular metaplex may be uttered or written in one of two ways:
Linear: [root] [branch] [crown].
Arrested: [root] [crown] [branch].
The linear pattern is by far the most common; in fact, everyday speech will usually consist exclusively of linear metaplexes. The arrested pattern is suggestive of more elevated speech, or of an attempt to persuade. As a general rule, the more important, impassioned, surprising, controversial, or unfamiliar a particular assertion is expected to be, the more likely it is to be arranged as an arrested metaplex.
Inflectors: It is possible to add a slant to a metaplex by placing an “inflector” after it. For example, the uninflected linear metaplex [Salix][approaching][herbivore] would be understood as “Salix is attacking.” If the character for “question” were placed after it as infelctor, it would become “is Salix attacking,” or, more literally “Salix, in approaching, like an herbivore is she?”
In order to say “everything is going according to plan” in Dendric, one would have to use an inflector. First we have the arrested metaplex, <[design][river][motion]>, then the inflector, “frequency/constancy.” When all four characters are combined, we get, literally: “The design is like to a river in terms of motion, in that they are both constant.”
