Brakul, Hibrides, and Janeys, together: What do you think would happen to the children if it came out that they were bastards? Do any of you have a contingency plan?
I do a script for all of these and this quickly turned into one that is way too lengthy to draw.:
---
[Hibrides and Janeys are seated and addressing the speaker, Brakul is seated nearby and staring at the floor]
Janeys [slightly flustered]: Well in a situation where such an accusation were true and proven as such, it-. Well, the best that could be hoped for is that the adulteress isn't executed so the children could go with her, and they'd all have to consider themselves blessed if so much as the most filthy, decrepit old widower was willing to claim them.
[Hibrides is tight-lipped]
Janeys: The thing with this- this slander is, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t-. It doesn’t REALLY matter as long as no one wants to bring charges. I mean it’s not like the slander is harmless either, but gossip doesn’t get my brother, uh, stoned to death.
Hibrides: Probably.
[Brakul raises his eyebrows, continues staring at the floor]
Janeys: ...And everyone who would benefit in ANY capacity is either dead or would’ve benefited most from doing it a long time ago. And beyond that there’s- absolutely no proof. Nothing even close to proof. No witnesses of the supposed affair, or my supposed complicity. I think I’d win at trial. And- and everyone who’s made implications are- their suspicion is just-. Entirely built on Erubi having red hair, and Brakul being the only other person in my household who has red hair, which is just-
Hibrides [interrupting]: My mother has red hair, so.
Janeys [pointing at her emphatically]: Her mother has red hair. It runs in the family. Like, are we pretending two dark haired parents having a ginger kid is just-just- beyond precedent? That's how half of the gingers in the world come into being! I mean my god, Prince Amanti Erub was one of them and I’ve never- NEVER heard of anyone doubting his legitimacy. NEVER.
Hibrides [can't help herself]: Um, actually, there was a minor scandal-
Janeys: Oh shut up.
Hibrides [undeterred]: ...around when he was officially presented as heir-
Janeys: You’re damn right it was a minor scandal, if I haven’t even heard of it.
Hibrides [continuing]: ...Usoma-Hittibe Amanti Ibrija publicly implied suspicion of Usoma-Maije Amanti Iäwe’s infideli-
Janeys [interrupting loudly]: -WOW yeah and then absolutely nothing came of it, thank you, you’re so knowledgeable about stupid shit that doesn’t matter, thank you so much.
[Hibrides has a tight lipped grimace]
Janeys [clasping hands]: Anyway, the biggest concern now is if fucking Yanne decides he wants to- to finally level these accusations to try and take my daughters' dowries, but I can’t see even him being that petty. I COULD see him trying it if I had an heir, but that never happened...
[Janeys gestures at Hibrides]
...and she’s getting much too old for childbearing anyway. I might have to adopt after all, which is just-...
[Janeys trails off, scowling at the ground. Hibrides' grimace has grown even tighter. She fiddles with her braids. Brakul is picking at invisible lint on his sandal]
Janeys: ...But if he does decide to, uh, pointlessly sully our family’s name forever by leveling these-. Disgusting accusations against his own cousin... I mean- again, there’s no evidence. No witnesses to the alleged adultery. Nothing.
[Janeys looks pointedly at Hibrides]
...The only real concern is if someone among of the accused developed some- some idiot delusion they could personally benefit from siding with the accusations.
[Hibrides sneers in disgust, then regains composure]
Hibrides: Mmm, yeah. Anyway, uh, If anyone went far enough to press charges, I'd be more concerned about our staff being, uh... Bribed or coerced to misrepresent things they've seen before a judge.
Janeys: ...
Janeys: I don't think-.
Hibrides [leaning in to speak quietly]: If you get- if you get any suspicion that there are charges in the works, and that any of the staff is- being bribed or something, you have to do something about it.
Janeys: Yeah.
Hibrides [staring at him with great intensity]: I mean it.
Janeys: ...Yeah.
[beat. Janeys looks a little nauseous. Hibrides looks grim. Brakul is now inspecting a microscopic stain on his kilt.]
Hibrides [backing off]: ...There's, uh, also a good chance you'd have to swear to your children's legitimacy under oath.
Janeys: Of course I'd have to- okay, so, uh. So... Uh. ''Both of my daughters were c- were conceived by my will, I was-. I was there. I have no reason to suspect my daughters are not my own blood.'' There. All of that is completely true.
Hibrides: ...That sounds suspicious but we can work on it. Uh, they might make Brakul swear an oath too. Ne-Dain, what will you say?
[Brakul casts an irritated, morose look over his shoulder]
Brakul: They're not my children.
Janeys: Yeah.
Hibrides: We can work on it.
