So I have to get a deep cleaning done on my teeth and omg I’ll be out of commission for three weeks and all I can think about is the food I’ll be missing out on. Like spinach dip my absolute favorite food

I don't know what he means by "preventative fillings" but my dad (who is my dentist) have put something on my molars (on like the chewing surface? Is that the word?) where the enamel been cracked/worn to strengthen the enamel/prevent future cavities. I brush my teeth twice a day and i don't floss very often, but I've never have had a cavity. I'm not sure if it's because of the what my dad did to my molars, because I've been lucky, or because of genetics.

You might be talking about sealants! Dentists often paint a coating on the chewing surface of molars that’s then bonded in a similar way a white filling is, to prevent decay in the grooves of the teeth. There’s no drilling of the surface of the tooth required. A lot of dental insurance plans in the US include this procedure for kids but not adults. While my family lost our dental insurance while I was in high school, my parents (and later I) paid out of pocket to get the sealants redone when they wore down every few years. Part of what was so traumatizing about the first trip to this new dentist was that I thought he was replacing my worn-down sealants as I was used to, but when I was in the chair he actually very lightly drilled out the grooves/fissures in my molars and put in very shallow fillings instead. I should have spoken up, but by the time I realized something different than expected was happening, I was both too shocked and figured it was probably too late to do anything.

I’m pretty sure it was a communication error and not him literally lying to me or something, but it was still very upsetting. When I talked to him about it, he was amazed at the idea that my old dentist had been repainting the sealants into adulthood, because “those are just for kids” and “aren’t covered by insurance anyway.” I would have happily paid out of pocket for them had I realized or had he asked. When I went back to my childhood dentist to ask about this afterward, he said that what my dentist did was not necessarily uncommon or out of line, but was probably not the best option for someone like me who has some staining because of my deeply fissured molars but has never actually had any problems with decay. Of course this new guy didn’t know that, because this all happened in the very first visit to his office. :(

my dentist told me this morning he has begun to dread seeing my name on his schedule, because i’m so nice and he hates how he always has to give me bad news.

Well day three after getting wisdom teeth removed and I still don't have pain?? Okay I'm cool with that lets keep it that way @'my mouth

I think the emotional pain from having oral surgery has gotten to me finally :|

Huh. You got yours done so much differently than I did. All they did was stick a needle in my mouth and numb me then waited five minutes or so for it to fully kick in and started drilling and stuff. Took all four out in like an hour or so. I just lay there staring at the ceiling and their faces and it was pretty boring

I think its different for each practice and how they do things. I didn’t get the option to not get knocked out since they haven’t even came in yet. Shockingly about 6-7 hours later the Oral Surgeon himself called to make sure everything was alright. (apparently they have a doctor on call 24/7 and makes calls after day of surgery) 

The oral surgeon my dentist recommended was very nice and my mom told me that it took like 45 minutes. (and i had to wait almost two hours >.<)
