omg i have derek haffar next semester. is he a good teacher?
Unfortunately, I’ve never had Derek as a full time instructor. My professor was unable to attend and asked him specifically to fill in for her. So in reality I really only got to experience his instruction for a six hour studio class. But when I tell you it was more than enough, I’m not lying. He was phenomenal. He has a ton of interesting stories about all the peculiar things he’s cast. A lot of students refer to him as the plaster master, and that he is. He spent half the class demoing different casting techniques and the other half making his way around the room for one on one talks about each students current project, providing feedback and giving suggestions. It was extremely helpful. Even my space and materiality teacher speaks with great fondness of him, as she is and has let him cast her daughters face on separate occasions. Needless to say, there wasn’t a dull moment the entire class. I really wish he was my studio teacher, and I plan on requesting him in the near future! x
Castaway, is a short video montage. Bodycasting with Derek Haffar at the Museum of Art and Design, with clips from before and after Hurricane Sandy. The ephemeral in us all.
