15. “Lost Vegas Part 1 of 6”
(Carpe Noctem # 1)
RATING: 3 🎰 Shady Vegas Nightclubs out of 10
I picked this up at a convention a few years ago because it was published somewhere in my home state so I wanted to try and support local creators. Honestly, I feel as though it would’ve been a pretty successful webcomic back in the early 2010s. The narrative structure and artwork are really reminiscent of that style, and while this wasn’t a fantastic read I do see glimmers of what could have become a cool opening arc. Sadly it seems that Hashtag Comics didn’t really make it, and I can’t help but wonder if the investment to make this a physical book that didn’t recoup the financial losses (with a $3.99 USD cover price for an 18 page comic...with printing errors) instead of solely digital distribution sunk them.
FAVORITE: The ruleset for separating the supernatural from the natural seems like it could’ve been solid
LEAST FAVORITE: The overuse of affectionate nicknames, because I talk like that to most of my friends and this comic pointed out that it can get grating. “Honey”, “babe”, “honey”, and “baby girl” in the span of a page and a half was a tad excessive.
