every woman is at the cusp of madness. she is only one step away from falling off the cliff of grace and landing on the bosom of insanity. yet she fears it deeply, resisting it, pushing it away like it’s a scalding iron rod which will brand her evil. she knows what happened to her foremothers who spoke against the institutions of “God” & his workings. the witches were burnt and the saints like mirabai were poisoned.

so she hides her darkness under the guise of being liked. her voice is honey sweet even when blood drips from her mouth. she makes sure to swallow it. every drop of it. yet madness lingers on in the crinkles of the clothes she folds, the rumbling of her belly, the sound of her footsteps. the threat of impending doom prevails.

she thinks she’s the only one feeling this way because all the other women are happy in their shrunken bodies, giving birth and raising families. they don’t complain about the lava in their wombs which keeps them up at night. their masks don’t slip because she thinks they aren’t wearing any.
