Who is a Design Engineer to me today?
When I first started out to think of it I assumed that there are the people who draft drawings of the machine or the product or an activity.And now it is clear that my answer’s proximity was me at the coast and the actuality being at the center of the ocean. The circumference of design engineer’s task consist of almost everything that exist on this universe to start and to end.And by this answer I cannot describe her/his work aptly as it is to be described. Yes that’s what you get ‘the incompleteness’ for being a beginner and with that there comes a strive to know more. During one of my grad classes I came across a term called “Design Development“.Our professor gave us a mere example of seat clutch. How it is designed? Why it is designed? And its shear means of existence in a particular way.But what woke my mind extraordinarily was when he demonstrated the development of design with the help of a piece of paper. “Shear force is high on sharp corners,hence the oval fillet to put the clip in the clutch and the failure by wear and tear is simultaneously eradicated.” Simple application creating wonders. The ability to explain a design and its shape with the help of a paper having finite thickness with making the forces act in same manner was mind boggling to me. That changed my perception towards design and its constructional abilities in a whole new way. I would also like to acknowledge how proper fabrication is equally important and its upto the Design Engineer to simplify and compact the process. She/he also has to look after the output the product is turning to be. That give them access to solve the complex problem that may occur during the manufacturing and hence will eventually improve the design accordingly. More on to the sequel of all of it, qualitative and quantitative research is required for every small curve you make on the machine. Strong study of products in the market, customer’s choices, its requirement, effectiveness and profitability is mandatory upgrading required for Design engineer. And above all, Passion for the task, a driving force for self and belief in what you do is the acme of anything and everything you do. Date: 6/18/2018
