The place of Demeter (and Persephone) in the paradigms of the Gods is partly predictable in terms of what has been said so far, but it also brings some surprises... She became a wife of Zeus (or was raped by Him) and gave birth to Persephone. Hecate helps Her later. This is paralleled by the Arcadian myth of Demeter (in Rose and elsewhere): while searching for Her abducted daughter She Herself becomes the object of a pursuit by Poseidon; after several changes of shape the rape takes place as a stallion on a mare and results in a marvelous horse called Arion or, in another variant, in a daughter called Mistress (despoina). This myth relates the equestrian Poseidon with Demeter in Her equestrian aspect. By yet a third myth Poseidon couples with Medusa, a Mother Terrible of sorts, and She and the resulting daughter are eventually slain by Perseus; the name Persephone may result from Perse plus phonē, "murder, slaughter." Artemis is sometimes confused or identified with Hecate...Finally, there is the myth of Zeus raping Leto in the form of a swan, which resulted in Artemis.
