Head Canon Light Diversity is TotP Series
How many kinds of Light?:
In my canon universe, the number of different flavors of Light one can have has to do with age and experience. Every guardian comes back with one flavor and, if we take out video game logic, it takes time to not only learn how to use their Light but also use it well and then master it. Even after that is achieved it is not always a sure thing they will get another flavor right away. On average, a guardian can get their second Flavor after 150-200 years, and then the third isn't acquired until some time after 450+. Again, that doesn't always mean they get them. Sometimes instead, they work on variations of existing flavors that they already have. This is why the only character from Hidden Wings that has control of all three is Corvan Blacksteel, who is upwards of 600+ years old, having lived through a great deal of the Dark Ages.
Variations in Light:
Often Guardians specialize in one type of Light rather than trying to expand their number of flavors. They take the base style of a common use of said Light and shift it around to either work different or strenth an aspect in it. Examples of this in TotP are Haar who can create and maintain his Ward of Light for a much longer time than most, and Corvan once again, who can fling arc energy off his staff and create a projectile (he's old as hell, he can do what he wants).
Other Oddities:
Gaining another flavor of Light at a young age is impossible under normal circumstances. The only heard ways of doing so are by either somehow taking another guardian's Light or having them give it to you. This is only ever touched on so far in the story by way of Tevis Giving Skylar his Void Light as he died, meaning at age three, she had two flavors of Light.
As to Skylar's Void Lightning, it was an odd occurrence that is unknown in reason. Ikora hypothesized that because the Void energy wasn't originally Skylar's that when the Light returned, the two fought for its place and ended up combining in the struggle. Either that or Cayde was right and Tevis forced it from the other side of wherever he happens to be. (even if we know he's not dead, they didn't.)

What is Light and how to increase level cap in Destiny
When you hit Destiny’s base level cap (20), higher level gear items get additional stat named- Light. Most 18+ level pieces of armor have Light stat. This stat is very important in your further leveling, because you stop gaining levels from experience points, but based on a number of Light points on your gear. New Light level cap (30) can be reached when you collect 120 Light points. For the 21st Light level you’ll need 21 points, and for every new level you’ll need additional 11 Light points. Upgrading the armor, will also increase the Light points number on that piece of gear. Upgrading Rare armor item will bring you +1 Light point, Legendary +2, and Raid and Exotic items up to +4. In order to get new Exotic and Legendary items, you’ll have to grind hard mode game content and wait for high quality drops, or increase Vangard or Faction Reputation with chosen vendor and buy purple items from him. You should also know that you have to achieve Reputation Rank 2 for Armor pieces and Rank 3 for Weapons, if you decide to buy a gear item from any vendor. If you have full Rare armor on your character, you’ll only achieve level 24 (60 light), thus you need legendary items. With full Legendary item set you can increase your Light level up to 28 (108 Light). In order to hit Light level cap you’ll have to combine 1 Exotic and 3 Raid gear items or simply all four pieces of Raid armor, fully upgraded. Raid Gloves, Chest, and Boots can be obtained from Vault of Glass – Normal Mode while the helm is obtained from Raid – Hard Mode. Each Legendary armor item starts with 18 Light, even Raid armor. Exotic armor starts with 21 Light. The cost of Ascendant Shards for Raid armor and Exotic Armor upgrades towards the end cost more than normal Legendary armor (8 instead of 6).
We would like to thank reddit user noz3r0 for explaining Gear items and Light mechanics in detail.

What to do next in Destiny when you hit level 20
After completing the main story missions, and strikes you will reach a base level cap 20. In this moment you have to decide what your focus will be – PvP or PvE, because there are different vendors you can get gear from: Class Vendor with Vanguard Armory (PvE), The Crucible Vendor (PvP), or any of three Faction Vendors (PvP). For Vanguard Armory you’ll need Vanguard Marks, and the rest require Crucible Marks.
Increase Light level
At level 20, your gear gets additional role – your further leveling is based on a number of Light points on your gear. When you hit base level cap, you stop gaining levels from experience points, but from a new stat called Light available on high quality gear. You need 21 Light points to reach level 21, and every next level will cost you additional 11 Light points. Since you need a new gear, you’ll have to grind hard mode game content in order to get more marks and reputation and buy Exotic and Legendary items. You’ll be pleased to know that when you upgrade your gear, it will also increase the Light points number on that piece of gear. You should also know that all vendors require a certain level of Reputation before you can purchase Purple items from them, Reputation Rank 2 for Armor pieces and Rank 3 for Weapons.
Complete Daily Heroic Story Missions and Weekly Heroic Strike
You can start with completing Hard Mode story Missions that you’ve already completed while leveling through the main story, but this time the enemies are more challenging. They reward you with Vanguard Marks, and Vanguard Reputation. You are capped at 100 Vanguard Marks a week. Weekly heroic strike resets every Tuesday and awards you with 3 Vanguard marks, +150 Vanguard rep and 3 Strange Coins.
Earn Reputation
Vanguard reputation (PvE) rank is increased by completing Strike Playlists, Daily Heroic Story and Weekly Heroic Strike. You can also do Vanguard bounties and Patrols for reputation. For Crucible Reputation (PvP) participate in the Crucible matches to get Marks and Reputation. Before you start a Crucible match, collect Crucible specific Bounties to increase your Crucible Rep. Faction Reputation – There are three factions in Destiny: Dead Orbit, Future War Cult and New Monarchy. When you equip a faction item specific for your class – a cloak, mark or bond, that will converts Vanguard rep into Faction of choice Rep, and you’ll no longer receive Vanguard reputation during Strikes, Dailies, Bounties or Patrols.
Collect Materials
Spin Metal, Relic Iron, Spirit Bloom and Helium Filaments are resources available throughout different planets. You can exchange 50 pieces of one resource for glimmer, marks or reputation, but choose the vendor you are focusing on getting gear. Strange coins are used for buying Exotic Gear from Black Market vendor Xur, located in Tower during the weekend from Friday 9AM until Sunday 9AM.
DW fanfiction - "Destiny Light", chapter 1
Because I'm not sure that posting it on Fanfiction.net would be safe for my account and my previous publications on that site, so I decided to post it on Tumblr.
It's quite ashaming, but I started to write that fic... nearly year ago. Because of education I didn't have enough time for writing anything. But now it'll be better, I hope.
Big, big 'thank you' to Tea for beta and some advices.
Let me - finally! - introduce you an adventure, where Eighth Doctor landed in early 80s and this time he doesn't have to cope with aliens or monsters, but with inexplicable human nature.
Why that title? Mostly because of that song. It makes no sense, but I like it.
I strongly recommend these two songs: 1 and 2 as soundtrack during reading. Yes, it's quite strongly connected to the music from that time and mostly because of that reason I couldn't post it on FF.net.
Have fun!
[Posting gifs that way is uncool, but sometimes it's only way. Damned size limits, I hate you.]
It still amazes me, how colouring could turn average doodle into quite nice pic.
Lizzie, my DW OC. I'm still angry on myself that Destiny Light - 'her' fic - is still lying on my harddrive in the same state as it was before summer break. Only beginning. Nothing more. Blah. Bad author, no biscuits.
