UK Scumscene Reviews Deus Vermin’s Monument of Decay

Deus Vermin describe themelves as, “black metal-infused death metal from Leeds” and a combination of two such extreme genres always makes me think that PR people might be overcompensating for a band just sounding a bit heavy. Surprisingly, Deus Vermin are about as unfathomably heavy as you could possibly imagine and that description is pretty much on the nose.

Deus Vermin — Monument to Decay (FHED Records)

Monument To Decay by Deus Vermin

Deus Vermin, a new blackened death metal act from Leeds, England, understands the power of brevity. Their demo, which appeared in November of last year, comprised only two songs, both under four minutes in length. Monument to Decay, their new EP, features six tracks, only two of which exceed four minutes. But every song the band has recorded lands some serious impact. Burly riffing and sinewy leads, a thick but athletic bottom end, a propensity for pointing the momentum down steep inclines — the music’s consistent traits and strong compositional quality make for an engaging and compelling 21 minutes of heavy sound.

“Swarms” represents Deus Vermin’s style and intensity. A booming, buzzing intro section gives way to a verse straight out of the Swedish old school. Then the tempo shifts, and a series of blackened riffs chop and weave their way into a serpentine guitar break. You look up and somehow three minutes have elapsed. There’s a strut to it all, verging on ostentation, and the cycling between death metal muscle and gnarly blackened speed is high-wire stuff. But Deus Vermin makes it all feel organic.  

That’s an impressive feat for a band that’s only released eight songs. And to be sure, not all the songs match the excitement and cleverness of “Swarms.” “Worms” is relatively pedestrian death metal, and the opening section of “Planetary Illness” is a little too interested in the scale of its riffs to notice that they aren’t all that interesting. But these are minor missteps on a record that’s otherwise sure footed. The interplay of guitarists LM and CG (yep, initials are all we get) is pretty terrific. Throughout “Iniquity” and during the fluid break in “Shrine,” their conversing is simultaneously supple and scabrous. Monument to Decay isn’t long enough (or otherwise large enough) to be truly monumental, but it promises substantial future pleasures…or wretchedness, or punishment, or most likely a potent brew of all the above.
