The devil’s ivy is also known as golden pothos, Ceylon creeper, Solomon Islands ivy, or hunter’s robe, which are all arguably less creepy names (but also arguably less badass). With heart-shaped leaves that come in variations of green and gold, it makes for a popular houseplant due to its lush foliage and low care requirements. The devil’s ivy is originally endemic (meaning it was found nowhere else on earth) to the island Mo'orea in the Society Islands, 17km north of Tahiti. Now, it has become naturalised in tropical and subtropical forests worldwide, including Australia, South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands and the West Indies. The plant has become invasive and caused severe ecological damage in some places, which is what granted it the association with the devil. 😈😈😈 Devil’s ivy produces trailing stems as they climb up trees that take root when they grow long enough to reach the ground. If supported with a trellis, houseplants can grow up to 2m tall. In the wild, it can grow up to 20m tall with leaves up to 100cm long. It will rarely flower naturally and most flowers will have to be artificially induced. Devil’s ivy enjoys a brightly lit spot but no direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves, and they can be easily propagated from cuttings. They can help pull pollutants from the air but are toxic to pets, so keep them out of reach of cats and dogs.
