Although Devon never met their biological father, they were never lacking for family. Amaia, Devon’s mother, lived in a hippie commune in Lake Tahoe, California. And living in a commune meant that everyone played their hand in raising Devon. Growing up they learned all about sustainable farming, how to reduce waste, and to connect with Earth along with all her inhabitants. Most of the people living in the commune were both activists and advocates, so Devon began attending marches and rallies (ranging from environmental issues to equal rights) from a very young age. Amaia encouraged and supported Devon’s learning about the environment, herself passionate about the cause and delighted to have her child share in her dedication to protect the earth.
The reason their mother was so passionate was because Amaia had the ability to speak with animals, but as time went on, her power progressed to where she could hear the constant cries of nature as trees were knocked down and habitats were destroyed. Devon soon noticed a shift in their mom’s attitude. Devon became more frequently left in the care of the others in the commune as Amaia’s intensity grew, even to the point of chaining herself to trees in protest. In return, Devon began pulling away from their mother more and attaching to the other members. Devon began tutoring some of the other kids at the commune as they entered their middle school years, and discovered they had quite the green thumb. Devon then soon took over Amaia’s responsibilities at the commune. When Devon was sixteen, Amaia’s actions finally escalated to her nearly burning an oil company’s headquarters to the ground, injuring several employees, and she was sentenced to 15 years. Devon fell under the care of her Uncle Craig (Clarke), who voluntarily moved closer to Lake Tahoe to allow Devon to finish out their high school years in as stable of an environment as possible.
During this time, Devon finally developed their ability to speak to animals, like their mother. They were frightened of it, but the power also provided an emotional outlet much needed for Devon. Although Craig himself didn’t have the ability, he was able to give them a few tips on how to control through what he had seen his sister do. But that wasn’t enough for Devon. They had seen what the power had done to their mother when unchecked. It was then that Craig recommended that they consider Skybourne University. Amaia had been admitted, but she never attended, so Craig still had the contact information. Even though it would be a tremendous change for Devon, they were determined not to go down the same path as their mother.
Amaia Clarke (mother - estranged)
Craig Clarke (uncle - alive)
Emma Soren: They first met when Devon moved on to the campus for school. Emma showed them around and led their freshman group around campus. Devon wants to meet her again because they think that they could be friends.
Taylor Burns: Since they were offered the opportunity to room with another individual that also identified as non-binary, they were assigned to Taylor. Devon is a little intimidated by Taylor since they seem so smart, but is also excited to room with them.
