dark rise spoilers or something but why does devon kill robert exactly? he sort of answers that by saying 'you thought you knew what a unicorn was but you were wrong' i think but i'm still not sure what that means. robert cares about devon and i'm pretty sure devon cares about robert too so like...what was the reason?...

In this scene in Dark Rise:

There was a shape in the doorway. “Hello, Robert,” he said. His voice sounded blurred, as if he were drunk. He added, in the same blurred voice, “I didn’t think you were home.”

He said it without thinking. In the next moment he felt a sudden flickering sense that it might not be Robert after all. He looked up, feeling a startled spatter of heartbeats, as if rolling around in the mud with lions could conjure up a figure impossible and long dead.

It was Robert. It was ordinary, human Robert. The look on Robert’s face wouldn’t have been there on the other.

Who does Devon think it is for second? Visander? Will (Sarcean)? Someone else (the returned King, or Sinclear in Robert’s body via the brand)? On my first reread I thought maybe Visander...but if he had thought that, then the comment on Robert’s expression wouldn't make sense, since it is clear from this scene that Robert cared for Devon and therefore was likely looking at him in a loving way, which we would expect Visander to do as well (which he did in fact do, when he finally realizes who Devin is in Dark Heir). Also, it seems like he knows it's Robert's body. So that makes it more likely to be one of the other options? But, it also feels like it couldn't be the Dark King either, since at this point Devon knows that Will is the Dark King, and therefore not "long dead". This would also apply if it were Sinclair. So who?

I've thought about it a lot and just cannot figure it out. However, I have a feeling this may be an important clue about Devon and his true motivations.
