i like thinking that dirk waking up already dressed in his clothes is because he genuinely thinks that's what your supposed to do. he wore the same clothes in blackwing everyday so like... yeah. he's gonna wear this suit tomorrow, so he has to sleep in it today, right?

One of the main things that Blackwing did was make everyone the same. 

Same colours, same clothes, same people. Constantly. For years.

The first time Dirk escaped he was floored by the sheer amount of colour in the world. His world had been one of grey fabric and grey faces and grey rooms, and to see all these people wearing entire rainbows on their bodies was a concept Dirk had found himself falling instantly in love with. So naturally, as soon as he sees the jacket, he knows he has to have it.

It’s a bright, cheerful yellow, like the essence of sunshine in a piece of fabric. Dirk doesn’t have much money at this point, and almost bankrupts himself buying the thing, but the feeling he gets when he puts it on is worth it. It’s so perfectly, unabashedly colourful - so unlike anything Blackwing would have allowed him to wear. Shrugging it on, it feels like he’s finally beginning to step out of their shadow.

Although Todd will vehemently deny it, he spends HOURS looking up how to properly make tea in his free time whilst he and Farah are making plans to get Dirk back from Black Wing. It helps him keep calm and gives him hope that everything will be okay. Dirk is surprised but definitely not unappreciative of Todd’s sudden competence. And, he certainly doesn’t mention it when he notices Todd’s internet history after he steals Todd’s laptop for ‘research’ ahemcatvideosahem one evening.

my mom’s DGHD HCs (the henchmen)

k so I was watching DGHDA with my mom a while back (around christmas)  and she had a theory about the henchmen that rimmer had.  Since Rimmer used to work at the zoo she theorized that the henchmen were different animals that had been put into human bodies.

she explained that one of their speech patterns and body language was very similar to that of a parrot (the kind that repeat speech) while another behaved more like a capuchin monkey.

I never really thought much about the theory until I was rewatching the show and kind of noticed what she was talking about.

dirk gently characters and their sleep patterns because im sleepy

farah: follows a strict schedule and must take melatonin/some other sleep aid otherwise she will literally never be able to sleep, her whole routine will be disrupted and the effects will send shockwaves of disaster throughout the agency for months

dirk: once told todd that the time he went to sleep 'depended on the weather patterns' and todd fully believed him for like 2 months. he fluctuates between sleeping like a rock for 10 hours straight, where literally no one can wake him up, and getting 1 hour of sleep. he functions exactly the same either way

todd: maybe the person with the most normal sleep cycle. used to be a really light sleeper (a habit born out of necessity) but can now manage one full night without being awoken. (of course, this relies on certain factors, for example excluding any of the times dirk has woken him up at 3am)

amanda: gets a lot of sleep throughout the day from naps in the rowdies van during long drives. so she sleeps less hours during the night. probably actually does change the time she sleeps depending on the weather

ken: insomniac, spends most time at night awake. despite this, he loves his bed and loves the 'act' of sleeping (spending 2 months sleeping upright in a car means he views any bed as a luxury experience)

bart: used to refer to sleeping as 'when your body goes real limp and floppy' and no one knew what she was talking about for ages. drinking caffeine makes her tired. sleeps whenever, wherever. curls up like a cat to go to sleep

wait which one is dirk is he the yellow jacket man. if he's the yellow jacket man then oh my god that first episode. i didn't truly get it but i watched it and was like HE'S LIKE ME!!! HE'S LIKE ME!!! anyways more autistic headcanons pleaaaaaaase pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase pleaaaaaaaaaaase starts licking away your eye grime

first of all YOU WATCHED THE 1ST EPISODE AND NEVER TOLD ME??? second of all yes he's the yellow jacket man!! third of all "he's so me" was also my first reaction.

here's a concise(ish) list of my recent autistic dirk thoughts/headcanons!!

1. Has a strong drive for autonomy, which leads to him impulsively jumping in to take control of things (like when he snatches things out of the other's hands to look at)

2. Can be very stubborn when it comes to his own beliefs and behaviour even if it's technically bad, and can get annoyed if Todd/Farah/Anyone challenges it.

3. Stims with the zipper of his jackets. The noise annoys Farah and they have to learn to compromise.

4. Hyperfocuses very intensely on things so he doesn't realise time passing at all. Needs to set multiple alarms throughout the day to stay on track with stuff.

5. Seeks sensory input through food. I've made multiple jokes about this before but he really likes elaborate sugary food because it makes his brain go "yay!!"

6. Terrible, god awful sleep schedule.

On the run from blackwing Todd often ends up sharing the back seat of a jeep with Dirk at night, and during this time he begins to notice several things. Number one is that Dirk talks in his sleep. Like. ALL the time. Most of the time it's just incoherent mumbling, but occasionally he forms whole words and sentences. It can be funny, but more often than not it's when Dirk has nightmares that he talks. Then Todd has to resist the urge to put a blanket over Dirk, or to hug him, or do SOMETHING like that - anything to stop that awful pained look on Dirk's face, one that had become far too familiar in recent times. Another thing that Todd realises is that Dirk is a very cuddly person. The first time it happens Todd wakes up with Dirk's head on his shoulder and his entire left side slouched into Todd. Dirk is obviously fast asleep, and Todd could shake him off if he wanted to, but Dirk looks so comfortable - and besides, Todd wouldn't want to wake him. Other nights, of course, it's a simple elbow in the face that Todd receives, so it's not always so endearing. (Or not endearing - Dirk isn't endearing or charming, he's annoying, Todd reminds himself ever more repeatedly than normal over these few weeks). Dirk is just like,, a naturally cuddly person ok.

Imagine Dirk sitting on a hill overlooking a forest, perched on a boulder or something, and watching the sun set. He has just recently been broken out from blackwing and the gang are still having to hide out here in the woods, to make sure they aren't found, and Dirk isn't recaptured. Dirk may or may not have been crying. All of that reconditioning (and all of the numbness it brought) is finally starting to break again and oh boy is he feeling a Lot of emotions right now. He gets kind of absorbed by it all, so he doesn't notice Todd climbing up the side of the boulder until he sits down right next to Dirk. Close enough for their shoulders to brush. Todd doesn't say anything, because what the hell COULD he say? But Dirk is okay with that. He's just glad of the company. They sit side by side and watch the sun disappear below the horizon and the stars begin to wheel across the sky, and with Todd sitting next to him there, Dirk doesn't feel so scared anymore. He is, of course, still terrified - terrified that blackwing will find them and capture Dirk again, terrified of what they might do to his friends, and, most of all, of the fact that Dirk knows anything that would happen to them would be undeniably his fault. But with Todd there, all of that seems kind of muffled. Still there, but easier to breathe around for once.
