The Mystery of the Two Lucias
(mild spoilers for chapter 256)
We're introduced to Lucia twice, once at the Campbell mansion in chapter 222 as an 8 year old girl and then at the Zoogle bookshop in chapter 251 as an adult. I'll refer to them as mini-Lucia and adult-Lucia from now on.
The two of them look very similar, with the only differences between them other than age being negligible, like mini-Lucia's freckles and slightly thicker eyebrows, and adult-Lucia's downturned eyes - and I had certainly thought of they might be the same person before, just in the past and the present (I'll admit that Hoshino got me good with this twist!) - but are they, really?
If they're the same person and both their appearances definitely took place in the present, what's going on with Lucia's age? A character being able to freely manipulate their age like this is not something we've seen before - the Earl's splitting was an anomaly, and the mismatch in Allen's age is something that has repeatedly made him suspect.
If they are two different people after all, then I think that adult-Lucia is an imposter. It's important to note that she has already lied when introducing herself by pretending to not be the Master of the Zoogle bookshop, and that Hashim never actually refers to her by name. Also,
The information in Lucia's Gray Log profile seems to fit mini-Lucia more than adult-Lucia (other than the reading and books part, but really. They're from the Bookman clan. That one could be applicable to any member.) and one part of it in particular is very interesting - she apparently dislikes Naga's mimicry. We've never seen this person show up in the manga, mini-Lucia just mentions them to Joe once. And yet Hoshino found this information important enough to include in her profile.
Also, mythological Nagas are shapeshifters. (Well, technically they shift only between human and snake form, but come on, now. Has this manga ever been 100% mythologically accurate before?) Also, shapeshifting is an ability that does exist in the manga - Fo can do it. Adult-Lucia has already proven to be skilled at magic by using her song to cure Allen.
So, adult-Lucia might actually be this Naga person who is still concealing their true identity by pretending to be Lucia. Now, who might Naga be? Everything from this point on is pure speculation, but there is one member from the Bookman clan whom we haven't met yet, even though they must've been very important to past!Lavi, appearing on his side of the Helix second only to Bookman while Lucia isn't even included in it.
Having been this close to past!Lavi before might also explain why adult-Lucia is so determined to find out what happened to him.
This person also wields the same staff as adult-Lucia does in chapter 256, though I'll admit that one might just be a Bookman clan thing - past!Lavi's staff looked exactly like this too.
Outfit notes by Hoshino-sensei on Instagram
Both Lucia and Lavi Sr have some family resemblance that I can't help but take some further attention to
Both of them have monolid/almond eyes plus a pair of glasses, a sharp jaw and a heart-shaped face . Just can't help but think "wow they really are related"
//something that I haven't seen anybody bring up, so forgive me if this has been said already, but, like... Given what we know now, shouldn't Allen technically be considered a member of the Bookman Clan?
//ALSO, PLEASE BEAR IN MIND, this is more shitpost-for-funsies than completely serious, so if you think I sound like an idiot, just chill and either keep scrolling or follow me for a minute while I spout silly thoughts
//considering what Lucia said about Zeugles/Zoogles (depends on your preference for how that's translated, but I personally prefer the former spelling) and how all Bookmen (as in the clan, not the title) are related by blood...I mean, for the most part, Allen's body is Past!Allen's body, yeah, but since the Helix physically MERGED him with Past!Lavi, wouldn't that mean that Allen has the previous Jr.'s blood as well? He would have Bookman Blood, so for all intents and purposes, could we consider him a Zeugle? Like, Allen as of right now doesn't have the "mark" of the bookmen that we've always heard of-- if he had it and nobody knew it, we would have likely gotten more hints as to what that mark is by now, but all we know is that it seems like it has to do with the eyes-- so I don't think he would be considered (another, bc we don't yet have official confirmation of Bookman's death) Jr., but that's also a possibility. But if he's not, then I don't think it would be a stretch to consider Allen Walker a Zeugle on a technicality, just an untrained one.
//TL;DR I think Allen should be considered a part of the Bookman Family after everything we just learned over the last year, give me Allen and Lavi calling each other family god dammit
Brainrotting a bit about Lucia lol
Warning: I didn't really dig enough especially i dont watch the author's livestreams (i dont know japanese huhu), therefore idk any quick trivia or clues she may have mentioned in passing. So these are just me going through face value materials available to average fans HAHAHAHA
my brain had gone weird again. When I first read ch 222, I had this theory that the scene with Lucia and Dr. Joe was a flashback because the first translation i read said "old" campbell house. And when Allen and the gang met an older Lucia in the bookstore... my personal theory (im not forcing anybody to think the same, hence, personal) kinda fit in more.
But another translation says..."at the same time" and "present-day" so idk anymore. And it was kinda odd that both Lucias wear the same exact outfit and hairstyle. Ok, anime/manga-wise, that is not really strange but it just felt like the outfit grew with her. Usually, even the outfit would indicate aging (some parts are styled a bit differently, etc.) but there's none. Even Allen changed hairstyles a couple of times, and Lavi, despite being consistent with his bandana and scarf, they still kinda change vibe or design. It kinda hit me that it's either two things: (1) "Lucia" is kind of a title as well and it's being passed down from gen to gen with a specific role, which means they have to maintain a certain appearance (hairstyle and outfit) throughout their lives while in the role. But this would apply better to the scene with Dr. Joe to be a flashback. BUT->
(2) If young Lucia was not a flashback, then what if there are more than one Lucia per gen? And in varying ages? What if like they are a group and they are all called "Lucia" ? I can't explain it well but it kinda explains why they wore the same outfit because it's a UNIFORM of some sort hahaha idk anymore. This is just me trying to make sense the "present day" label with a young lucia ajskdkahdowa
ngl i want the younger lucia scene to be a flashback because i dont want our lavi (current) one to be the one described as "no longer here" hahahaha dakjshdkajmpw no offense on prev lavi, i love you, too but TT^TT
Edit because my i forgot to add something after all that typing:
I know there's the consideration of it being the same person (Lucia) while the 222 scene is not a flashback. After it was confirmed that Allen's the host and even Neah knows it IS him but was confused by his age, a way to vary one's age doesn't seem so foreign to this story anymore. Hence, there is a possibility that someone out there can pretty much alter it, or hasten it. Either it's magic or a characteristic unique to a clan (i mean some vampire stories show fast aging and then stopping at some point, not in this story but I'm just saying it's not a new concept), I, at least, am not sure. [Again, I'm not able to consume every content for this manga because of language barriers.. and there's a lot not translated or idek some content existed until much later. I think even the fanbooks and artbooks have clues but I was never able to read those *sobs*]
But the fast aging does not make sense to me...yet (if it is true, i know Hoshino-sensei would have a very surprising way to show it to us and it would make sense), that's why if it was not a flashback, then the Lucia in 222 in the mansion with Dr. Joe and Lucia in 251 are two different people or heck maybe like JasDevi and The Earl (with Mana and Neah) are like two bodies from the same entity.
It may or may not be that I missed some dots and clue about this from the previous chapters (i believe any questions we have are already answered before, we just dont know the connection to past events yet... Sensei is like that lol) but this is what i undertsand for now.
TLDR, Lucia is a mystery 🤣🤣 like, how...? Hahaha
Clues into DGM Future Chapters?
Saw this interesting post on Reddit speculating on a character seen in an image Hoshino posted on Instagram just a few days ago (12/20/20). Is this possibly a hint or a draft of a chapter to come? And who is this long-haired bearded fellow?
In the left panel, we can see someone wearing a headband, who resembles the young girl Lucia who's at the Campbell mansion. We know Bookman is at the mansion currently (how he got from Sheril’s chair to the mansion is still a mystery, to me at least), but the gentleman in the right panel much more resembles Cross, who, after meeting some fate against Apocryphos, is said to be "sleeping" according to Road.
So, my initial guess is that Cross has somehow made it to the mansion. It's hard for me to tell from the image whether or not he has aged, BUT 1) he is definitely without his mask, 2) his beard/goatee is more filled in, & 3) he's known to be a sorcerer who is likely much older than he appears. Other theories I saw on the Reddit included this being only-so-far-referenced Naaga, who’s taking care of Bookman and sends young Lucia to alert Joe (who’s at the tree Cornelia) of his wakening. Someone also pointed out the in the left panel, the figure approaching Lucia has the uniform style & build of Lavi. (Did he also escape Sheril’s chair?!) I’m also now just noticing a hint of a scarf on the fellow in the right panel. So, what do you all think? Hints of things to come? Or Hoshino just messing with us?
