Solangelo makes me annoyed.

I love the idea of the ship! And if it had been done right I would've been delighted. If it had been built up like some other ships, like percabeth. Opposites attracting, the romance, the drama. It could've been adorable and well thought out and showing a lot of Nico's growth and recover from major trauma. He had a whole nother five books to show it! But like, the ship was extremely forced.

Nico went from pained, needing serious trauma recovery, hurt, and frankly in desperate need of time off and away (preferably with family to support him like say, Hazel), to "I like Will 100% with no actual reason and also my trauma is miraculously cured". I remember thinking it sounded like Fanfiction with how fast he crushed on Will.

That just... He got a crush on Percy who kicked butt when they first met, Percy was his hero. It was hero worship puppy crush. Will did nothing to gain such immediate attention? And the Percy crush that he'd had for years just vanished? It would've made so much more sense if he'd even showed some connection at the beginning of the hoo series, or shown that they were very familiar with each other. But nope, just met and with no actual incentive is majorly crushing on Will.

Will came out of nowhere, it seemed very much like he just shoved the two together for no reason but "he's gay! Look! He has a boyfriend! At 12! It's official :)"

And, he just kinda tossed half of Nico's character. There's a reason people are going "UwU our gay baby" and it's cause canon makes him a soft boy now that needs Will. He kinda trashed the whole extremely independent and strong aspect.

That would've been fine! Nico is a child and needs to recover. But he showed nothing of the recovery process. And he made it seem like getting a boyfriend solved all of Nico's mental health issues. And Nico struggling to use his powers would be fine too, it was bad stuff that happened, but again, he isn't treating it seriously anymore. Nico has been relegates to gay boy that needs help from boyfriend. And that's a disservice to his character.

I have no issue with the ship in theory, and if it had been written right it would probably be my favorite ship. But there was no build up, it's a relationship with a power imbalance, and Nico's characterization just kinda went down the drain.

I'm just sad because I've read fics that build that ship up with such skill, it could've been amazing, instead it seems like Rick just shoved it in there to give the gay kid a boyfriend.
