Went to the Diefenbunker today - totally worth a visit if you're in the area!
Photos from my trip to the Diefenbunker, the former “Emergency Government Headquarters” bunker in Carp, now a cold war museum.
The bunker was commissioned by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker in 1959 to house the upper echelons of Canada’s civilian government & military for 30 days in case of a nuclear war. Nicknamed “Diefenbunker” by the press as a joke, Diefenbaker never actually visited the bunker, and swore he would never use it after finding out that his family would not be allowed to join him in the event a nuclear war actually occurred.

thinking about how weird it is that i grew up a 30min drive from the Diefenbunker (literally "deep bunker," but also "Diefenbaker's bunker" bc the PM was John Diefenbaker at the time), which is this formerly secret underground nuclear bunker for the Canadian government during the Cold War in case of nuclear war.
and the tunnel that goes from Parliament building in downtown Ottawa approx. 30km directly to the Diefenbunker for the Prime Minister and other government officials.
and the fact that it's "decommissioned." my mom, sister, and i always believed that it is actually fully-functional in case of emergencies (which we seem to be approaching in the coming decade). personally, i always believed that there's only part of the Diefenbunker that's open to the public and that there are closed-off floors/sections we aren't allowed to visit / supposed to know about.
anyways watching the Danny Gonzalez weird houses video and it got to the bunker part and i was like ohh yeah the massive 5-storey decommissioned underground nuclear war bunker a 30-min drive from my childhood home
this is literally what it looks like from the outside btw ^^ like the Citadel in Hfx, it is designed to be invisible from an outside POV.
(there are fallout bunkers scattered across Canada, but this would be the headquarters if something were to happen. hence the tunnel from Parliament to the Diefenbunker.)

Did You Know Smiths Falls was the 'Safe Place' for Nuclear Fallout?
Did You Know Smiths Falls was the ‘Safe Place’ for Nuclear Fallout?
Diefenbunker- Linda Seccaspina Smith Falls is not a probable target of a nuclear attack but it has a three-fold role to play, Major General G.S Hatton, of Ottawa, deputy coordinator of Civil Defence for Canada, told members of the Smiths Falls Rotary Club Friday. The role of Smiths Falls, if a nuclear bomb were to chance to go off a few miles upwind of the town is very slight. But, we need to…

So I signed up for a race* alongside a friend and there was the option of buying extra insurance** that will refund the cost of the ticket if you can’t attend - with a restricted list of valid reasons, of course.
I decided to take a look at the exact terms and one of the things they specifically list as Not Covered In Canada is “Nuclear reaction, radiation or radioactive contamination.” So now I’m trying to figure out why that might be a risk here in the Canadian PNW and what this company knows that I don’t.
So..yeah, writing the thesis is going great.
*13k and 600m of elevation gain what is wrong with me **Yes I bought some. It was inexpensive and worth it for the “but what if I get the flu (or covid19) the week before” peace of mind.
