I really wanted to put this second part out because i want to keep this blog consistent. Apologies if this is slop :(
You sit on your bed, surrounded by text books and notes. Monday and Tuesday were the days you decided to meet and work on your project.
Aki sits on the floor chewing on a pencil as you write on your laptop.
“Is that mine?”
His teeth stop clattering against the wood as he turns to look at you. “No.”
You sigh, it was in fact yours. You shake your head as you flip a page. “Have you read from paragraph four to five?”
“I am working on it.” He looks down at the book in his lap.
“Well, work faster please. This project is worth like half our final grade.”
“Fine, fine, don’t get pissy.” He mumbles, you can hear the smirk on his face.
Silence falls as you two work on your project, writing formulas, creating a presentation. He quietly gets up from the floor and climbs up into bed, slotting himself between the wall and you.
You try not to blush and keep focusing, fingers trembling slightly over the keys. He keeps reading like nothing, lazily highlighting keywords and sentences.
“What does this mean?” He murmurs as he points on the page.
“Carbon dioxide.”
“Hm.” The words are soft on his lips.
Heat creeps up your chest, you get up as you shut your laptop. “Do you want a snack- Uhm water, maybe?” You ask, trying to get your mind to not think about how his thighs and shoulder were pressed against you.
“I’m good.” He says, not looking up from the book.
You nod and turn to the small fridge you had in your dorm to get yourself an energy drink. As you open the can and start pouring it into a glass with a few ice cubes you hear the click of a lighter. Aki was lighting up a cigarette, on your bed. In your dorm.
“No! Don’t do that here!” You put your hand forward.
He raises a brow and looks around. “Come on, scared I'll make your manga smell like smoke?”
“Exactly! At least go to the window. Don’t get any ash on the blankets.” You walk over and put an empty can on the banister next to him.
“Fine, dork.”
You both sit by the window, looking out of it as you take a break. The fizzy drink replenishes your energy as you sit cross legged in front of him.
The view of the campus from your dorm was pretty nice. You could see most of the park outside, and where the students would go to study when the weather got warmer and the days were longer.
“We should go study out there.” He suggests.
You nod and look down: A couple of girls were walking by, they heard Aki’s voice and snapped their gazes up. He leans closer to you, shoulders slightly touching, and smirks down at the girls.
“Do you know them?” You ask as he puts the cigarette in front of your lips. You instinctively take a drag and look into his eyes.
“Yeah, I know ‘em.” He keeps holding your gaze as the smoke curls around you. He looks down again when you pull away. The girls were whispering amongst themself and shooting you nasty glances. “Next time we should work on our project at the library.” He leans back against the wall.
“Why? What’s wrong with my dorm?”
“Nothing is wrong with your dorm, sweetheart. You should be around people.”
“Why?” You raise your brow and flush at the nickname.
“Because I will not let you kill yourself socially.” He snorts.
You look down at your lap, considering his offer.
“Mh, sure. We can go to the library for our next meeting.” You run a hand through your hair. “The one in the north-wing or the one in the west-wing?”
“North wing.” He answers flatly.
“The most crowded one, got it.” You sigh and lean back against the wall.
On Tuesday, you two meet at the library after the second period. A couple of groups were already huddled around tables. The north-wing library was always packed since it was the one with the biggest collection of books. It even had computers which were updated every year.
You were there ten minutes earlier, so you had time to walk in, ask for the table you booked, and set out the materials.
Aki shows up fifteen minutes late. He keeps telling you that his tardiness is “Fashionably late.”
The time flows quickly as you both get to work. Well, mostly you work, he just sits there and scribbles on the paper sometimes.
“I genuinely can’t believe that you didn’t study your paragraphs! We had a week, Aki!” You whisper-shout as you sit across from him in the library.
“I didn’t have time for that crap.” He leans back in his chair, slightly shoving his books away.
“Just- do it now.” You hand him a pencil.
“No.”
“Aki-”
“I said no, dork.”
You blink a couple of times at his arrogance. “Fine then, do the powerpoint presentation with the material I'll give you?” You turn the laptop to face him.
He looks into your eyes then at the laptop, debating whether to be an asshole or not. “Fine.” He smirks and starts typing, the clicking of the mouse fills the quiet space.
You lean back against the plush chair and sigh loudly. Loud enough that it makes Aki laugh. You smirk as well. “Laughing at my frustration?”
“Maybe.” He draws out the M as he keeps his eyes on the screen.
You flush slightly at the sound, clearing your throat as you hunch back over the project. Blushing like an idiot because of a guy like him. You can’t allow yourself to do that. You shut your eyes and shake the thought away.
Aki looks up from the laptop to the other side of the table. A girl was chewing on her pen as she looked over her shoulder, ignoring her study group. Her gaze was locked on you, studying you with mean eyes. When she notices Aki looking at her she gasps softly, fixing her hair and giving him a wave, showing off her polished fingernails.
He raises a brow at the sudden change. The gears in his head turning. Why was she looking at you like that? Sure you were an absolute dork, and a little bit annoying but you didn’t deserve to be looked at with such disgust.
Aki gets up and walks over to your side of the table while keeping his gaze locked on the girl, not waving back to her yet.
He sits down next to you, knees touching under the table. You glance up at him but keep quiet.
Then he looks up and waves at the girl. She frowns and turns back to her group.
“What’s wrong?” You whisper.
“Nothing, keep studying.” He taps the book and turns back to the laptop.
“Why did you move closer to me?” You brush your hair over your shoulder then put your chin on your hand to look at him.
He looks down at you, squinting. “Because I can? Do I have to explain every single thing I do?”
You roll your eyes as a smile tugs at your lips. This guy got more pragmatic at every interaction you had. Silence stretches between you two. Sounds of pages being turned, pens clicking and erasers being rubbed against paper fill the library.
“Are you going to keep staring at me or can we keep working?” You sass him despite your ears burning.
His eyebrows shoot up at your unusual tone. His own pale skin turns a faint shake of pink for a moment. “Working it is.”
After three hours of intense working and fleeting glances he closes your laptop. “I can’t study anymore. I am beat.”
You close your book and start putting your pens away. “That’s it for this week, I guess.”
You both get up to leave, you throw your bag over your shoulder and reach for your headphones. Aki shoves his hand in his pockets and walks out the big, fancy library archway.
“Wait.” You call out before drowning out every noise with loud music.
“Mh?” He bends down slightly.
“Why do you keep getting closer to me when girls that like you are around?” You blurt out in a flat tone, looking straight into his eyes.
“I-” His head flinches back for a moment. “What?”
You sigh, your hand clenches around the strap of your bag. “You heard me. Why is it that you get all close. Why do you make me take drags from your cigarettes when girls are watching or teasing them from afar?”
He shakes his head and takes a step back. “Are you jealous?”
Your eyebrows furrow. “No, I am not jealous. I thought you would be using me to get good grades on the chem project, sure, but not this?” You stick your neck out.
He throws his head back. “This- What, this what?”
“You know what I'm talking about!” Your voice raises. “I am some individual that you use to swat off girls?” You press your index finger to your chest. “Because I am so undesirable and weird that people won’t talk to you if they see you interacting with me?!” A knot forms at the bottom of your throat but you keep pushing the words.
He lifts his hand to sit at his head level. “Undesirable- No! I am not doing anything, I am not using you in any way!” He scoffs. His face curls as if you offended him personally. “You thought I would use you? Do you think I’m some fucking asshole?” He extends his hand to you in an accusing way.
Your eyes widen. “Asshole? No more like-”
He cuts you off. “More like what? Just because I don't get smashed at parties, don’t yell during lectures or always talk about fucking bitches i am an asshole.”
You close your eyes and throw your head back. “Those guys are another kind of assholes. But if you are not using me then what are we? Mh?!” You shout.
After your outburst you could hear a pin drop in the hall right outside the library. Tears were bottling at the corners of your eyes. This was what you feared since you were still in high school. Being made fun of or people treating their friends differently because they were speaking to you. You felt like the butt of the joke. You already dealt with students using you to pass classes but this? This was new.
“So?” You break the silence. “Answer me. What are we?”
He looks down at the floor, fists clenching at his sides. “We are…”
