The Digital Convergence

“I share therefore I am” (13:47).  Sherry Turkle states the problem that we have with our technology use as this quote. There is less meaning in our text message and calls that we make. It is so easy to get rid of the “real life” that we feel uncomfortable, and escape to the “technology” by checking our Facebook and twitter feeds to connect with the comfortable people and the place. The short video of KENZO “The Realest Real” is showing the “technology world” that we escape to. The video makes me feel creepy at the same time, and sense of weirdness. Both videos explain what we do on social media and the “real life” well that I could reflect myself who often escape from “alone” to the “where someone listen to me”.

I mostly agree on everything that I watched. Because the message or comment on social media is easy to make, I will not take time to rethink where I’m going to post. Because it is frank and casual, there will be some negligences in my words. For example, I text back with “LOL”, but I am not actually laughing out loud. If I am laughing so hard, I will not get you back is a second. I agree with the part when the article talks about “social media leads people to say a lot of things that aren’t literally true”.

The complication of digital convergence in our lives is following us everywhere we go and every time when we are on our media. As the technology develops, people find more useful and easy-access to the media where we have our own space. I have experienced many times when people eat lunch or dinner together, but they are on their phone, and no conversation between us. When I meet new people and feel nervous or uncomfortable to sit with them, I escape to the media and digital world that I feel comfortable to be. I believe most of us feel the same way for one of the reasons to check the phone many times.

However, the digital convergence has the positive aspect of us that they actually make our life easier. Some people find the support from the digital world that they feel comfortable to voice their opinion. It is easy to find someone who has the same point of view as one does, and they can share the messages and even be friends. Like what Sherry says in her speech, there are people who find comfortable with the technology as the speaking robot. It is now becoming impossible to get all the technology away from our lives. We have to deal with the complication of the digital convergence ,and take advantage of the developing technology.

Triple Play

A report by Booz Allen Hamilton has predicted that more than half of European homes will be plugged into 'triple play' services of TV, broadband internet and telephony from the same provider by the end of the decade. The study also suggested that these digital homes will trigger more than €100bn (£60bn) in investment and generate more than 100,000 jobs, mainly among infrastructure providers such as cable and telecoms operators. A further €35bn is expected to be invested by content providers. However, the consultants warned that heavy-handed regulation, blocking competition, could cut the cumulative investments by 40% and wipe out 90% of job creation. The report comes days after France Telecom confirmed that it had lost 600,000 fixed-line subscribers last year, mainly to 'triple play' competitors such as Neuf Cegetel and Alice in France, Europe's third largest economy. Issuing a profits and sales warning, the group's finance director said that Internet based telephony (VoIP) would account for 40% of fixed line traffic by the end of the year, compared with 15% in 2005 and 1-2% in 2004. Convergence is the coming together or distinct and separate factors of phenomenon such as technologies. “Convergence as analysed here is a combination of two factors: technological improvements in processing power and the adoption of common protocols and standards.” (Milton Mueller, VOL.6, 1999). Digital convergence is the coming together of technologies and applications. A great example of digital convergence is the Apple iPhone. The iPhone is not only a mobile phone which you can make and receive voice calls and SMS, it also allows the user access to the internet and a camera for photography and video. As technologies evolve and products become more powerful and more able, convergence will continue to grow in its digital form. Visual Communicators use products of convergence daily, for example the personal desktop computer. Apple released their first user friendly personal desktop computer in 1984, named the Macintosh. This personal desktop computer was a first of its kind. The Macintosh allowed design houses to be able to create useable designs through a computer and print physical work on Apples printing devices. Product developments like this have changed not only the world of digital design but the access and availability of communication and data sharing. For the 30th anniversary of the Macintosh, Apple have stated this, “You could move things around on the screen, change the way they looked, combine words with images and sounds, and create like never before.” A new era had begun and this would create a brand new way for graphic designers and visual communicators alike to create work.
