Every Sunday we’ll be doing a penguin of the week where we feature a certain penguin species or a penguin from TV, film, literature or just everyday life. Today’s penguin is Dindim!

Several years ago, retired bricklayer Joao Pereira de Souza was walking on the beach near his home in Brazil when he came across a small penguin, covered in oil and near death. He immediately rescued the bird, and fed him fish daily to get his strength back up. When he tried to release him into the ocean a week later however, he wouldn’t leave. Touched, de Souza named him Dindim, and happily allowed the penguin to stay with him. Dindim stuck around with de Souza for another 11 months, waddling behind him wherever he went and eating the sardines he caught in his work as a part-time fisherman.

Dindim left after 11 months, but now returns to his friend de Souza every year and spends about 8 months of the year with him. He is estimated to spend the rest of the year breeding off the coast of Chile, nearly 5,000 miles away. “I love the penguin like it’s my own child and I believe the penguin loves me” de Souza said of the bird. “...every year he becomes more affectionate as he appears even happier to see me”.
