Having recently reread Dire Worm! I find myself thinking about the role of minions/lackeys/henchmen, and this scene really shows off the service that a trusted minion's ignorance plays for their lord: not only does the minion's ignorance allow the schemer to exposit upon the scheme, but the minion's doubts allow the plotter to gloat over the thoroughness and reliability of the plot.

Just as the boss provides shelter and food for the hench, the hench provides enrichment for the boss.
