𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘄𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱-𝘂𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀! A few weeks ago, a Volvo S60 came to us with a 'reduced engine performance' warning: a DTC P0103 issue. We remove the EGR, the intake manifold, and the throttle body, mechanically cleaned the carbon build-up, and put everything back. While this servicing is inevitable in high-mileage Direct Injection (DI) engines. What's strange is that this car has done less than 40K kms. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿? 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 #𝟭: The EGR or Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) systems might be defective or poorly designed off the bat. Premature profound carbonization is often symptom of a problem with PCV or EGR. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 #𝟮: Insufficient highway driving. If you don't drive on the open road for about 30-60 mins every fortnight, your engine oil is going to get pretty dirty by blow-by, especially in a diesel engine, which does a lot more volume of EGR. Short trips and cold starts exacerbate the formation of sludge in the inlet system and once it's there, it stays. However, highway driving does not clean up any contamination— mechanical cleaning is the only remedy. Cars that don’t get a lot of highway driving should have engine oil changed twice a year instead of annually. 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀? No. In a DI engine, fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber and is thus completely separate from the inlet air system until the the inlet air gets into the cylinder. Fuel additive in a DI engine never physically interacts with the inlet air system. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗜 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? Because DI engines are more efficient and responsive. They offer better better fuel economy and lower emissions. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆: Sadly, complexity is the enemy of reliability. In this case, highway driving is the primary line of defense. . . . . #directinjection #portinjection #cars #diesel #petrol #gasoline #engines #emissions #exhaustgases #egr #manandmachine #justkeepdriving (at Hyderabad) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHU-GHOJvmU/?igshid=yv0nk8rhrtzz
