ykw i really hate? the fact that when i use my regular cane out and about, no one talks to me anymore. sellers don't yell for my attention to get me to buy stuff by storefronts and what have you. i mean, im VERYYY glad to be rid of that. yeah, its annoying, blah blah blah! buuut. why? what is the implication here? why is my dollar worth less? do they think i dont have money, that i cant pay for myself? is it embarrassing to talk to me? to ask for my time like you would an abled person?
AND ALSO! when i wear my compression brace for my knee, suddenly EVERYONE wants to help me. oh, do you need help carrying that ma'am? is there anything we can do? it's kind, obviously, but it feels flat because i know what part of my retinue of aids is causing this "care". i would rather someone not say anything and treat me as you would an abled person, and just step back. though yes its very helpful to have aids made accessible in stores and have that brought to my attention, the way people do it still has the unfortunate effect of making me feel like a total freakshow.
be less awkward abt disabled people please, folks. if you set up that tension, i am not going to break it by mocking myself or explaining myself to you.
