Lip-reading and accents

So, my hearing is pretty much unimpaired, but I have sensory processing Stuff that means that I tend to rely on lip-reading as a supplementary means of hearing speech, especially when, e.g., I’m watching something for which I can’t for some reason use the subtitles.

And over the last couple of years especially I’ve started to really observe the difference in the way people’s faces move with different accents, especially when it’s the same person, and especially someone I’m reasonably familiar with.

So, e.g., David Tennant’s mouth and face in general move very very differently when he’s using his native Scottish accent (in interviews, while playing Alec Hardy, etc.), as opposed to when he’s doing the London accent he uses for the Doctor, Crowley, etc.. To the extent that I can make out his likely vowel sounds when just watching him speak in a soundless gif. :-)

I’m not sure it’s quite at the point that I’d be able to tell a familiar actor’s accent in an unfamiliar role from an at-speed gifset, but I would be very unsurprised if there are more experienced lipreaders who can. I find this rather fascinating. :-)

Does anyone else get annoyed that they can't do hand gestures like Live Long and Prosper or Nerdfighter because they don't have enough control or movement in their hands?
