Limb difference vs amputee

I've been seeing a rise in people using the term limb difference and also rise in (what I think are well meaning) folks shouting "Amputee is not a dirty word, stop talking over disabled people, just say amputee" and while I love the energy, that's not what's going on here lol.

Amputee refers to anyone who has lost a limb or was born without one/multiple of their limbs.

Limb difference is a broader umbrella term to refer to anyone with a physical disability the effects the person's limbs specifically, usually (but not always) in ways that are visible to others to some degree. It can refer to amputees, but also people with single-limb paralysis, people who's limbs didn't develop properly (even if it's not severe enough to be considered an amputation) and more!

All amputees have a type of limb difference, but not everyone with a limb difference is an amputee.

As far as I'm aware, the term actually started in congenital amputee circles (people who were born without a limb) because they felt the word amputee didn't really fit them properly. amputee implies they had the limb but it was removed, but they never had it to begin with. It eventually spread to become an umbrella term, but it was created by and for disabled people.

I do understand some people's hesitation with the word, it does sound kind of similar to "differently abled" but I promise, it's not.

give me a show with disabled queer representation. and I don't just mean amputee that is not affected at all by their amputation because "we're all basically the same- woo friends!". I don't just mean non descript wheelchair user that uses a hospital wheelchair. give me young queers using canes and rollators and white canes and powerchairs. and give them bright hair and make them neurodivergent and have struggles in life relating to them not fitting in with a lot of abled queer representations and "disabled friendly" pride events that aren't disabled friendly. make them black, make the Asian, make them fat, make them interesting. make them angry, make them punk, make them pastel, make them have interest and passions, have them protest, show them taking breaks and having to take care of themselves. please.

Can I remind u all that having a physically disabled character is not inherently "body horror" and please stop tagging it as such

Yeah, a lot of body horror does become disability

But I saw a fic that was tagged as body horror purely because one of the characters was an amputee that every other character pitied and I am begging you not to do that shit

I know the concept of a “food coma” is really normalized in our society but if you really get exhausted very easily after eating large meals / large amounts of snacks you may want to get checked out by a doctor. You may have trouble evening out your blood sugar, rapid gastric emptying, notable food sensitivities like celiac / MCAS / histamine intolerance / caffeine intolerance / salicylate sensitivity, or even POTS. Especially if your fatigue and exhaustion are coupled with irritability, confusion, or a feeling like your heart is beating harder and more noticeably.

Last week was apparently Dyspraxia awareness week, so shout out to all my fellow beings with dyspraxia!

It really affects so many aspects of life, and is so frustrating to deal with.

It sucks having a hidden disability that you just know your friends would look down upon you for having if they knew about it, even if they don’t mean to.

They can argue about it as much as they like before finding out, but dude I know you. I’ve heard what you’ve said about others and jokes you’ve made, and even if you haven’t meant them to be ableist that’s what they are. And I’ve also heard what you’ve said about me, and I know that you hold me in far too high esteem to learn something like that. So yes, I know you will look down on me for it, and that’s not something I really want to happen.

I hate seeing people say, "If they have no friends, it's a red flag." It's frustrating because I know why I don't have friends. It's not a red flag, I'm just disabled.

What that means is I don't have energy to hang out or even come to school most days. I can't drive to the beach for 5 hours because most beaches don't accommodate me. I can't walk too much either.

People who say that don't realise that there is a population of isolated disabled people. It's not because we did something wrong. The world just isn't accessible enough for us.

P.s. This doesn't apply to every disabled person, but I feel it needs to be talked about even if it's a small minority.
