Just as we previously predicted, Japan’s CHAI was a darling at SXSW this year. Despite the countless sets that the energetic group played in Austin, and even though they were at the top of our acts to catch list, we ended up missing out on them. The closest we came to catching them was at Rolling Stone’s showcase, but we had to leave before they went on. But we have good reason to do so, because come Wednesday night, we’re prepped and primed, pumped and excited, to take in CHAI in all their glory at Popscene and Burger Boogaloo presents at the Rickshaw Stop, with Haiku Hands opening too, no less. CHAI released their acclaimed album PUNK earlier this month, and we’re more than ready to experience the album’s punk-tinged art rock and pop live. The band linked up this week with Los Angeles animator Sean Solomon for an adorable music video for album track Curly Adventure. Despite its splashy enamel and prismatic allure, Curly Adventure is actually one of their more reticent anthems, but it’s still an exuberant and glorious tidal wave of electrifying and contagious vibrancy. CHAI goes vintage italo disco on the electronic/synthpop track, giving us a sound that recalls Phoenix’s last album Ti Amo as well as M83′s Junk. PUNK is out now via Burger Records, here. Brass toting Brooklyn electro-funk and disco electro chefs French Horn Rebellion serve up a light and airy treat in the form of new single Rooftops, which features lissome vocals by Natalie Duffy. We dip into its crisp cool electronica and dance pop, thoroughly enchanted by its nimble beats and sparkling synths. Rooftops is a blissed out confection, a surprisingly weightless and spry, nimble and halcyon song from the versatile brothers, who usually dish out robust and plump bangers. The track first premiered via Billboard. Robert Perlick-Molinari of FHR explains: “There’s something magical when you get to the top of building. Looking down you see how small everything is. Looking up you feel this cosmic connection. And when you’re with someone you love that feeling becomes euphoric." Rooftops is out on FHR’s label YouTooCanWoo, and they’ve just announced that they’ll be expanding their “Night Out” series of collaborative performances into national and international markets. There must be some irony involved when someone presents you with a song named Stop Moving, and it’s such a smooth grooving, perky decadent jam that it’d be absurd to not move. Disco funk inflected synthpop comes our way on Swedish four piece Simian Ghost’s luxuriant single. Thomas Hedlund of Phoenix produced the track, which comes as no surprise considering the French house flavors running through Stop Moving. In fact, Stop Moving is like a juncture between Daft Punk and Phoenix. The single comes as a second taste from Simian Ghost’s forthcoming self titled full length. In The End is Starfucker’s current glorious single from their 2016 album “Being No One, Going Nowhere” and it’s received a fittingly glam music video treatment now, too. It’s hard to believe Starfucker has been around for a full decade, but they have. There’s no sign of slowing down when it comes to these esteemed Portland psych pop and electro rock purveyors. We twirl around in heady delight to In The End’s lavish disco electro and smoldering dance rock. “Being No One, Going Nowhere” is out on Polyvinyl Records.

Swedish troupe Ruby Empress likes to call their music “Debussy disco”, and you’ll quickly comprehend why once you’ve heard the band’s third single to date, a lavish dazzler named Escapism Deluxe. A classy glam and elegant luxuriant dosage of velveteen electro funk and French electro house engulfs us as we delve into the brazen dashing tune. Escapism Deluxe is a disco swanky groover that channels Justice, Phoenix, and Jungle, all at the same time. It doesn’t get more “deluxe” than Escapism Deluxe, a taste off the quartet’s debut EP, Empressionism, due out February 10th. A music video is expected to arrive soon. In the meantime, Escapism Deluxe is out via all major services, here.

There may be a massive amount of controversy surrounding US relations with Russia right now, but we’re more than fortunate that this commotion can be set aside when it comes to music. Moscow’s Tesla Boy renders me a molten mess with their pastel glowing synthpop and lively bounding nu-disco single, Avoid, their first song of the new year. Cool synths are met by flushed falsettos and resolute drums on this undeniably infectious anthem. Tesla Boy explains: “The idea of this song is that people often fool themselves by pretending that they are not bothered and don’t care about the past. But in fact, somewhere deep down, they know that something else is catching them and holding them still.” Well, I know what’s catching me now, and I don’t need to avoid the fact that it’s Tesla Boy. Avoid is out now via all major services and outlets.

We’re having one of the biggest storms of the season right now in San Francisco. It nearly felt like a hurricane when I was trying to drive home through horrendous traffic earlier tonight. What could be a better time than a night like this to get down to some disco house? We’ll feel warm and cleansed after grooving to this crisp stainless instrumental remix offered up by Finland’s Disco Despair. Except, there’s little to despair over as our spirits rise to his edit of British producer Birdee’s I Want You, a track off the Three Sides Of Love remix package out now on Youth Control. Despite its glamorous plump nu-disco, this I Want You is also dreamy and light. Pouring rain fades into the distant past as I find myself blithely bouncing on pastel hued puffs of feathery clouds.
