Elize Pescaro x Kirin Jindosh

Following his disastrous expulsion from the Academy of Natural Philosophy - and an unrelated but traumatic industrial accident in Tyvia some years after that - Kirin Jindosh finally arrives in Karnaca, the birthplace that never wanted him but also the last place in the Empire of the Isles where he is not (yet) pursued as a grave-robber and serial killer. Harbouring a secret core of fierce bitterness and unfaded resentment towards the Royal Physician, Anton Sokolov, whom he considers most responsible for the miserable trajectory of his life thus far, Jindosh once again begins anew the labourious struggle to build the shining legacy he envisions, to stamp his name upon the world in spite of his naysayers.
With several murder charges and the untimely invention of the silvergraph during the outward-rippling chaos of the Rat Plague and Jessamine Kaldwin's assassination from distant Dunwall, Jindosh unexpectedly draws the attention of Duke Theodanis' son, Luca Abele, who uses his growing influence to grant the disgraced natural philosopher pardon, protection, and prosperity in exchange for the promise of Jindosh's loyal service once Luca inherits the title of Duke. Rapidly jettisoned towards untold wealth and opportunity as a result of this whalefall connection, for the first time in his life, Jindosh can hardly keep up with the ever-increasing demands on his time and genius intellect - especially not while also maintaining the particular standard of presentation now expected of him by his nobleborn patron. To handle the myriad affairs now beneath the direct attention of the imminent Grand Inventor of Serkonos, Jindosh must hire a housekeeper.
Elize Pescaro is a born-and-raised Karnacan native, daughter to a proud line of fisherfolk who long predate the arrival of owl-carved ships from the North. She is prematurely driven out of her ancestral profession as a result of politics and the changing economy, itself brought on by the whale oil boom and rapid industrialization of the 1820s. After an experimental lobotomy - inflicted upon her while involuntarily committed during her adolescence - leaves her mind ruined, constantly beset with hallucinations of the living and haunting manifestions of the dead, Ms. Pescaro henceforth evaluates herself suitable only for domestic servitude. Nevertheless, her natural curiosity and burning desire for all-round social improvement drives her to accumulate knowledge from the private libraries of her middle and upper-class employers, especially from those who fall victim to the ambitious machinations of Ms. Pescaro's cousin, Paolo, to whom she owes her liberation from the asylum that once destroyed her.
After a harrowing interview, under strict conditions, Jindosh hires Ms. Pescaro in 1846; she expects a very short period of employment, its termination marked by the simple opening of a door from the inside, another star tattooed upon her cousin's back, more books for her collection, and a glowing reference for her portfolio carefully forged of signature. In short order, however, circumstances drastically change, and so does Ms. Pescaro's opinion of her new employer. No longer is he a suitable victim for her cousin, but a monster much too dangerous to kill without due care, and yet also - perhaps - every hope Ms. Pescaro has ever had for the city of Karnaca given material form. With this change in convictions, she convinces her cousin to stay his blade and devotes herself to Jindosh's household and business, swiftly becoming integral to not only his entire operation during the development of his so-called greatest invention, the Clockwork Soldier, but the craftsman's very wellbeing.
Throughout the tumultuous years of Duke Luca Abele's reign in Karnaca and that of young Empress Emily at the heart of the Empire, Elize and Kirin grow closer, eventually augmenting their bond of professionalism with something more empassioned. The question remains whether she will convince him to sever his connection to the Duke before it is too late...or if her own deadly secrets will prove her undoing.
