I've decided that while it's pretty improbable for there to be a Sokolov painting of Elize, especially after she has any association with Jindosh, there is actually one that exists of her mother, although she was never named in the work nor even compensated for her appearance.

It is not a portrait but a scene of Karnacan washerwomen hard at work in the early morning light, painted when Sokolov first started taking southerly sojourns for his health. Timi Jak is given a small measure of greater prominence within the busy scene, owing to her beauty and the fact that her observed blindness and deafness was a point of curiosity for Sokolov at the time.

Perhaps, at some point years prior to 1852, there's an exhibition for Sokolov's work in Karnaca. Jindosh attends, of course, because it's not like he's bothered by the fact that Sokolov ruined Kirin's budding academic career - anymore - given his success as the Grand Inventor, perish the thought. (He lies, lyingly.) He takes Ms. Pescaro along because she doesn't know anything about fine art, thank the Void, so he can take refuge in the company of at least one person at the event who isn't sycophantically gushing Anton's praise.

And then Elize sees The Inclusion of the Washerwomen and is so surprised to recognise that particular corner of Karnaca and its painted subjects so familiar to her that she reverts to girlish delight. That's her mama. 🥰

🤔 I think for such a comprehensive exhibition Sokolov would probably have to be there. Unless Kirin's been very successful in avoiding a face to face meeting (doubtful), they've probably already interacted. Sokolov has pissed Kirin off by being pretty dismissive or mocking of Kirin's rise to fame under his own merit even without a degree from the Academy; Kirin can't just take his +1 and leave immediately because doing so would make it obvious Sokolov has gotten under his skin.

Even a reproduction of the washerwomen painting would be out of Elize's price range sadly and Kirin's too much of a tight-arse, even if he wasn't slightly annoyed by the betrayal of her enthusiasm over even a single painting of Sokolov's. Then, Elize asks if he thinks there's a silvergraph somewhere and if she'd get in trouble for capturing just the fragment of painting with her mother. Kirin, immediately cheered up by her mention of his invention and the prospect of cheapening the painting's exclusive grandeur, is all too thrilled to embark on a tiny criminal enterprise with her. He helps her acquire a silvergraph from someone/somewhere, they sneak back into the gallery when all the guests have been ushered out into a different hall, set up the device, take the capture, then Kirin develops it for her with his own darkroom once back at the Mansion.

I need to go back and edit For Lack of Eyes, methinks 🤔 there's so much information missing because I didn't expect it to become a multichapter work of some significance (to me). I hate the thought of boring anyone with repeated character descriptions across multiple works or spoiling plot events for other fics if i ever write them but i have to do something or Elize is going to eat my brain from the inside out like the scarab beetles in the Mummy 😔
